Rainwater tanks do two very different jobs in Auckland. In the city, they cut demand on the mains for gardens, toilets and laundry, and help during summer water restrictions. On lifestyle blocks and islands without a reticulated supply, the tank is the water supply, and it has to be reliable and safe to drink. We supply and install water tanks across Auckland: we help you pick the size and material, set the base, and plumb in the pump, first-flush diverter, filters and overflow so the tank works from day one.

We handle both. That includes tank placement and sizing, connecting to spouting and downpipes, pressure pumps, first-flush diverters, filtration and UV, and any mains top-up or backflow protection the setup needs.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Do you need a building consent?

Auckland Council says a rainwater tank may not need building consent if all of its conditions are met. Under its guidance, an exempt tank is for outdoor use only, holds no more than 35,000 litres, has no mains top-up, is not connected to internal plumbing, does not change drainage or stormwater flow, and sits directly on the ground.

Once a tank feeds toilets, laundry or the kitchen, or has a mains top-up, consent is normally required and the work must be done by a licensed plumber. Tanks on stands have their own height and volume rules. We check your plan against the current rules before you buy anything.

Getting the tank size right

Tank size depends on how much roof area feeds it, how much water you plan to use and how long you need to get through dry spells. A small tank on a big roof overflows in every storm and runs dry in summer anyway.

For town properties using tank water for garden irrigation and toilets, the limiting factor is often space. On rural sites relying on tank water, we size for summer, when rainfall drops and garden and stock use climbs. We also look at whether a second tank or a water carrier top-up plan makes sense.

Keeping tank water clean

Roof water picks up leaves, bird droppings, dust and anything else on the roof. Sediment also settles on the tank floor over time, so drinking water tanks need periodic water tank cleaning as well as treatment. Treatment works best as a sequence:

  • Leaf diverters or mesh on downpipes to keep debris out
  • A first-flush diverter to dump the dirtiest water from the start of each rain
  • Tank and pipe materials suitable for drinking water contact
  • Sediment and carbon filtration after the pump
  • UV disinfection where the water is used for drinking

What affects the cost

Every tank project gets a free quote, because sites vary so much. The main factors are:

  • Tank size, material and whether it sits on the ground or a stand
  • Distance from downpipes and the house, and any trenching
  • Whether it feeds outdoor taps only or internal plumbing
  • Pump, pressure tank, filtration and UV equipment
  • Consent, mains top-up valve and backflow protection where required

Auckland sites we work on

In established suburbs, the challenge is usually fitting a slimline tank down the side of the house and connecting it neatly to the existing downpipes. On Waiheke and Great Barrier, and on lifestyle blocks around Kumeu, Riverhead and Clevedon, tank water is often the only supply, so reliability and drinking water safety come first.

Clay soils and sloping sections need a properly prepared base so the tank does not shift. Overflow also needs somewhere to go: we connect it to the stormwater system or a suitable soakage area so it does not end up under the house.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Water Tanks

Consent checked before you buy

We check your plan against Auckland Council's exemption conditions before you order a tank. Where the tank feeds toilets or laundry, or has a mains top-up, licensed plumbers do the work and the consent paperwork comes with it.

Treatment in the right order

First-flush diversion, then a calmed inlet and floating intake where the tank design allows, then sediment filtration ahead of UV. Cleaner water reaches the filters, so cartridges last longer.

Tank, pump and plumbing together

The same team connects the downpipes, overflow, pump and any mains top-up with backflow protection, so you are not coordinating separate trades.

Price agreed before work starts

Every tank job gets a free site quote and a fixed price before anything is dug or ordered.

Water Tanks FAQs

Do I need consent for a rainwater tank in Auckland?

Not always. Auckland Council says outdoor-use tanks up to 35,000 litres, sitting on the ground, with no internal plumbing or mains top-up, may not need consent. Others usually do.

Can I drink rainwater from my tank?

It can be made safe with good roof and tank maintenance, a first-flush diverter, filtration and UV treatment.

Can a tank supply my toilets and washing machine?

Yes. This needs a pump and usually a building consent, and the plumbing must be done by a licensed plumber.

What size tank do I need?

It depends on roof area, water use and how long you need to last through dry periods. We size it with you during the site visit.

Do I need backflow protection if my tank has a mains top-up?

Yes. Any connection between a tank and the mains needs the right backflow protection to protect the public supply.

How often should a tank be cleaned?

Check gutters and first-flush devices regularly and inspect the tank for sludge build-up. Many tanks need cleaning every few years.
