Backflow is water flowing the wrong way, from a property back into the public supply. It can happen when mains pressure drops, for example during a burst main or heavy firefighting demand, and it can pull in water from irrigation lines, chemical dosing systems, boilers or pools. Backflow prevention devices stop that, but only if they actually work.
That is why testable devices in Auckland must be tested every year. We test, repair and replace devices for homes, lifestyle blocks, cafes, schools, factories and apartment buildings, and we take care of the paperwork.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Who needs backflow testing in Auckland
Responsibility is split between Watercare and Auckland Council. Watercare installs boundary backflow devices, except on fire supplies, but the property owner must maintain them and have them tested every year. Devices inside a property, behind the boundary, are overseen by Auckland Council and usually appear on the building's compliance schedule. Commercial sites often have both, which is why backflow sits alongside the rest of our commercial plumbing work.
You probably need a test if any of these apply:
- You have received a Watercare reminder letter about a boundary device
- Your building has a compliance schedule and a building warrant of fitness
- There is irrigation, a pool, a boiler or chemical dosing on site
- You run a cafe, salon, medical practice, workshop or factory
- A new device has been installed and needs commissioning
Device types and hazard ratings
The device required depends on how risky the property is to the public supply. Watercare's guidance groups them roughly like this:
- High hazard, such as hospitals and chemical plants: reduced pressure zone (RPZ) device
- Medium hazard, such as public pools and garden irrigation: double check valve
- Low hazard, which covers most private homes: air gap or hose vacuum breaker
How It Works
What happens if a device fails
A failed test is not unusual. Rubber seals and check valves wear, and debris from the mains can stop a valve seating properly. Watercare treats a failed boundary device as a priority. If it is not repaired and retested within two weeks, Watercare can repair it and invoice the owner.
When a device fails, we tell you on the spot, explain why, and give you a fixed price to service or replace it. In most cases we can rebuild the valve with a parts kit on the same visit and retest straight away.
What affects the cost
Your total depends on:
- Number of devices on site, including any on irrigation or fire supplies
- Device type: an RPZ takes longer to test than a double check valve
- Access, such as devices in locked plant rooms or deep pits
- Any repairs, parts kits or replacements needed after a failed test
Paperwork, done properly
A test is only half the job if the record never reaches the right place. For boundary devices we complete the test certificate Watercare accepts. For internal devices on a compliance schedule, we provide the IQP documentation your building warrant of fitness needs.
We keep a record of every device we test, with location, serial number, results and parts used, and we contact you before the next annual test is due so it never becomes a surprise letter. For landlords and body corporates, that register covers every site they manage, which is a large part of our property manager plumbing service.

We keep a digital record of every device we test, with location, serial number, results, photos and parts used, and we contact you before the next annual test is due.

Backflow Testing FAQs
How often does a backflow device need testing?
Every year. Watercare and Auckland Council require annual testing of testable devices.
Who is responsible for the boundary device?
Watercare installs it, but the property owner is responsible for maintaining it and paying for the annual test.
What is an IQP?
An Independently Qualified Person, registered with Auckland Council to inspect and test specified systems such as backflow devices for building warrants of fitness.
How long does a backflow test take?
Usually 20 to 30 minutes per device, depending on type and access.
Does my house need backflow testing?
Only if a testable device has been installed, which is common with irrigation systems, some rural supplies and homes with pools or boilers.
What happens if I ignore the reminder?
If a boundary device fails or is not maintained, Watercare can carry out the work and recover the cost from the owner. For internal devices, it can hold up your building warrant of fitness.
