Suburbs that grew from the 1950s at Howick and Pakuranga, through to the late 1990s and 2000s build-out of Botany and Flat Bush, plus state housing at Glen Innes and big industrial zones at East Tāmaki and Highbrook. Rainwater tanks do two very different jobs in Auckland. In the city, they cut demand on the mains for gardens, toilets and laundry, and help during summer water restrictions. On lifestyle blocks and islands without a reticulated supply, the tank is the water supply, and it has to be reliable and safe to drink. We supply and install water tanks across Auckland: we help you pick the size and material, set the base, and plumb in the pump, first-flush diverter, filters and overflow so the tank works from day one.
East Auckland rainwater tanks: coastal air, clay ground and big roofs
East Auckland is a peninsula between the Tāmaki River and the Tāmaki Strait, and for many homes from Howick and Bucklands Beach around to Pakuranga, the sea is never far away. That matters for a rainwater tank, because the equipment around it lives outdoors in salty air. Pumps, pressure switches and brass or steel fittings close to the water are exposed to salt spray, and exposed headlands such as Musick Point catch the wind straight off the strait, so we fit a pump cover or enclosure, choose fittings suited to the location and keep electrical connections dry and sealed.
Housing across the east is a mix. Homes at Howick and Pakuranga date from the 1950s onward, while Botany and Flat Bush were built out in the late 1990s and 2000s. Larger family homes in the newer areas often have generous roof areas, which can fill a tank quickly in a downpour. The overflow then becomes as important as the inlet, and it needs to discharge to the stormwater system rather than onto a neighbour's section or against the house.
The ground under the east is mostly Waitemata sandstone with heavy clay. Near the Tāmaki River and the Pakuranga and Botany creeks, alluvial soils can stay damp, and in the east around Ōhuiarangi / Pigeon Mountain basalt can sit close to the surface. Each changes how we prepare a base. Clay needs compaction and drainage, wet ground needs a solid pad, and rock may mean the tank sits higher than planned.
Across the eastern suburbs the mains reach almost every street, which makes a tank here a supplement that waters gardens, fills cisterns and serves the laundry. Where a tank is plumbed indoors or topped up from the mains, backflow protection and consent come into it, and we check that before you buy.
Local tip: If your East Auckland home is near the coast, ask for the tank pump to be housed in a ventilated cover so salt air does not shorten its life.

Water Tanks East Auckland FAQs
Does salt air near Howick or Bucklands Beach affect a tank pump?
It can. Salt spray corrodes exposed metal and electrical parts. A suitable pump cover, corrosion-resistant fittings and sealed connections help the pump last.
Can a tank supply my toilets and washing machine?
Yes. This needs a pump and usually a building consent, and the plumbing must be done by a licensed plumber.
How often should a tank be cleaned?
Check gutters and first-flush devices regularly and inspect the tank for sludge build-up. Many tanks need cleaning every few years.
