Most appliance floods do not start with the appliance. They start with a reused inlet hose, a tap behind the machine that nobody can reach, or a drain hose pushed into a standpipe with no air gap so dirty water siphons back. The machine is new; the connections it relies on often are not.
Cheeky's Plumbers connects dishwashers and washing machines across Auckland, fits and replaces laundry tubs, runs water lines to fridges, and moves laundries when a renovation calls for it. We set each appliance up to the manufacturer's instructions, with its own isolating valve and a waste that suits the machine.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

What a proper appliance connection includes
A dishwasher or washing machine needs three things done right: water in, water out, and a way to shut it off. On a typical install we check or fit:
- An accessible isolating valve on each supply, so the machine can be turned off without shutting the house down
- New inlet hoses rated for your water pressure, never the old ones from the last machine
- A drain hose looped to the height the manufacturer specifies, so the machine cannot siphon
- A proper spigot on the sink trap or a correctly sized standpipe and trap for a washing machine
- A full test cycle, watching the fill and the pump-out for leaks
Braided hoses: the part that fails quietly
Flexible braided hoses feed most washing machines, dishwashers, mixers and toilets. Research by insurer IAG in Australia found these hoses last around 10 years, and hose failures made up 22% of the 15,000 household water damage claims it looked at in one year. Warning signs include kinks, bulging, rust on the braid and any weeping at the fittings.
IAG said at the time it was not aware of a major braided hose problem in New Zealand, but the hoses here are the same type and age the same way. When we install an appliance we fit new hoses, and we will check the other flexible hoses in the kitchen and laundry if you want. Knowing where your shut-off valves are, including the toby at the boundary, matters most on the day a hose lets go.
How It Works
Dishwasher wastes and kitchen connections
A dishwasher usually drains into the kitchen sink trap through a spigot. Level, the BRANZ guide to sustainable building, notes that one trap can serve two domestic sinks and a dishwasher, but a sink with a waste disposal unit must be trapped separately. That matters if you are adding a dishwasher next to an existing waste disposal unit, because the waste layout under the bench may need changing.
We also handle the supply side: a dedicated valve, the right hot or cold connection for the model, and slack to slide the machine out. Fridges with ice makers get a cold line with its own valve, an inline filter if wanted, and routing that will not be crushed by the fridge feet. For wider work such as moving the sink, see our kitchen plumbing page.
Laundry tubs, standpipes and moving a laundry
A washing machine can drain to its own trapped standpipe or share a trap with a laundry tub; Level confirms one trap may serve one laundry tub and one washing machine, and the discharge pipe from a fixture to its trap seal must be no longer than 1.2 m. We replace cracked or rusted tubs, fit new tap sets and wastes, and set standpipes at a height that suits the machine's pump.
Moving a laundry is common in renovations, for example from a lean-to into the kitchen or a hallway cupboard. MBIE guidance gives moving an existing laundry tub to a new spot in the adjacent kitchen of a house as an example of exempt work. Longer moves can need new drainage, and drainlaying work and consent are assessed case by case before we quote.
Cost of appliance installation
A straight swap where the valves, waste and space are already right sits at the lower end. New isolating valves, a new standpipe or tub, fridge lines run a distance, or moving the laundry add to the price, and we confirm a fixed price before we start.
Appliances in Auckland homes
Laundries in Auckland houses turn up everywhere: in garages under 1970s brick and tile homes, in lean-tos behind villas, in cupboards in new townhouses and apartments. Garage laundries on a slab can be awkward to drain if the waste was never set up for a modern machine. Apartment and unit owners may need body corporate approval before changing a laundry location.
Older villas and state houses can still have galvanised supply pipe or worn stop taps behind the machine, which do not shut off fully. Replacing those when the new appliance goes in is quick and saves a callout later.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Appliance Installation
New hoses every install
We fit new inlet hoses rated for your pressure rather than reusing old ones, and can check the other flexible hoses in the room while we are there.
A valve you can reach
Every appliance gets its own accessible isolating valve, so a leak means turning one tap, not the whole house.
Wastes set up to the manual
Drain hose height, spigot or standpipe and trap are set to the manufacturer's instructions so the machine drains and does not siphon.
Laundry moves handled properly
When a laundry moves, we sort the supply, waste and any drainage, and tell you upfront if consent is likely.
Fixed price, on time
You get a fixed price agreed before we start.
Appliance Installation FAQs
Can you install my new dishwasher?
Yes. We connect the supply and waste to the manufacturer's instructions, fit an isolating valve if there is none, and test a full cycle before we leave.
How often should washing machine hoses be replaced?
Insurer research from Australia found braided hoses last around 10 years. Replace any hose that is kinked, bulging, rusty or weeping, and fit new hoses with every new machine.
Can a dishwasher share the kitchen sink trap?
Usually yes. One trap can serve two sinks and a dishwasher, but a sink with a waste disposal unit needs its own trap.
Can I move my laundry to the kitchen?
Often. MBIE gives moving a laundry tub into the adjacent kitchen of a house as an example of exempt work. Longer moves may need new drainage and are assessed first.
How much does appliance installation cost?
New valves, standpipes, tubs, fridge lines or moving a laundry add to that, and we confirm the price before starting.
