Every Auckland house connected to town water has a private water main: the buried pipe that runs from the Watercare meter, usually near the front boundary, across the section and into the house. It is often the longest pipe on the property and the one nobody thinks about, until the lawn goes soft, the driveway starts weeping or a Watercare bill arrives with numbers that make no sense.
We repair and replace these supply pipes across the city. That might be a single failed joiner dug out and replaced, or a full new line pulled in under a concrete drive so you keep the surface intact. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start and a clear record of what was done.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Who owns which part of the pipe
Watercare sets the line at the point of supply, which for water is the outlet of the meter fitting closest to your private pipe. That rule applies whether the meter sits inside your boundary or out on the berm. Everything upstream, including the meter itself, is Watercare's to maintain. Everything downstream, including the main across your section and all the pipe inside the house, belongs to the owner.
For cross-lease properties, Watercare works off the boundary of the original title, not the lines between units. If two or three homes share one supply pipe, sorting out who pays for a repair is a matter for the owners under the cross-lease. We can show each owner exactly where the fault is.
Signs your water main is failing
A supply pipe usually leaks for a while before anyone notices, because the water drains away into the soil. Watch for:
- A wet strip or green patch of lawn along the line from the street to the house
- Water seeping from a crack or control joint in the driveway
- The meter still turning when every tap in the house is off
- Pressure that has dropped across the whole house, not just one tap
- A sinking patch of path or garden where the pipe runs
How It Works
Old pipe materials we replace
What is in the ground depends on when the house was built. Villas and bungalows in suburbs like Grey Lynn, Mt Albert and Devonport were often connected with galvanised steel that has rusted from the inside, narrowing the bore and eventually pinholing. Many 1970s and 1980s homes, including a lot of brick and tile houses across the North Shore and East Auckland, used grey or black polybutylene, and its joiners are the usual failure point. Older black alkathene lines on rural blocks and long rear sites tend to split at fittings and where tree roots have squeezed them.
When a section fails, we check the pipe either side. If it is brittle or corroded, patching one spot often just moves the next leak a metre along, so we may recommend replacing the run in modern polyethylene pipe.
Repair, replace or mole under the drive
Once the fault is pinpointed, there are three usual options. A local repair means digging one hole at the leak, cutting out the damaged section and joining in new pipe. A trenched replacement suits open lawns and gardens where digging is easy to reinstate. Moling, sometimes called thrusting, drives a tool underground between two pits and pulls the new pipe through behind it, so the driveway, paving or established garden in between stays untouched.
Moling is not right for every site. Auckland's volcanic rock in places like Mt Eden, Epsom and Mt Wellington can stop a mole, and other buried services have to be located first. We locate power, gas and drains before choosing a route. If the main is part of a wider problem inside the house, our repiping team can quote both together.
The Watercare leak allowance
If a leak on your side of the meter has pushed up your bill, Watercare may give a partial credit. Under its current policy, the leak generally needs to be fixed within 21 days of Watercare's letter or email about higher than normal use, or before that notice arrived, and the application made within three months of that notice. A second allowance within two years needs a plumber's invoice.
Use from filling pools, topping up tanks, irrigation or exterior cleaning is not covered. After a repair we give you an itemised invoice with photos of the failed pipe, so the evidence is ready. If you are still unsure where the water is going, start with leak detection.
What affects the cost
Every water main job is quoted free, because the length of pipe and what sits on top of it vary so much. The price depends on:
- Whether it is a single joint repair or a full new line from meter to house
- Surface over the pipe: lawn, garden, concrete, exposed aggregate or pavers
- Ground conditions, especially clay, fill and volcanic rock
- Distance from the meter to the house, which can be long on rear and rural sites
- Whether moling is possible or the line has to be trenched
- Reinstatement, such as concrete cutting and patching
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Water Main Repairs
We find it before digging
Our vans carry pipe locators and acoustic gear, so we trace the line and listen for the leak first. You get one hole at the fault, not a trench across the lawn on a guess.
Options for hard surfaces
Where the pipe runs under a driveway, we look at moling a new line through before suggesting any concrete cutting. You see the options and their prices side by side.
Paperwork for Watercare
Every repair comes with a photo and video job report and an itemised invoice, which is the evidence a leak allowance application needs.
Fixed price
The price is agreed before we dig.
Water Main Repairs FAQs
Is the water main to my house my responsibility?
Yes, from the outlet of the Watercare meter onward. Watercare looks after the meter and the network on the street side of it.
How do I know if the leak is on the main or inside the house?
Turn off the isolation valve where the main enters the house and watch the meter. If it still moves, the leak is on the buried pipe between the meter and that valve.
Can you replace a water main without digging up my driveway?
Often, yes. Moling pulls a new pipe underground between two small pits. Rock, other services and very long runs can rule it out, which we check first.
Should I repair the leak or replace the whole pipe?
If the rest of the pipe is in good condition, a repair is fine. If it is brittle polybutylene or rusted galvanised steel, replacing the run usually saves money on repeat callouts.
Will Watercare credit my bill for the lost water?
Often they give a partial leak allowance if the leak is fixed within 21 days of their high use notice. Irrigation and tank top-ups are not covered.
