A weak shower is one of the most common complaints we hear, and one of the most misdiagnosed. People buy new shower heads, blame Watercare or put up with it for years, when the real cause is often a half-closed toby, a clogged valve or a pipe that has narrowed with rust.
We treat low pressure as a fault to be measured, not guessed at. Pressure and flow readings at the boundary and at each fixture tell us where the problem is, and that tells us the cheapest way to fix it.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Common causes of low pressure
In Auckland homes, low pressure usually comes down to one of these: On tank or bore supplies, weak flow often traces back to the water pump itself.
- A toby or main valve partly closed or seized after earlier work
- Galvanised pipe narrowed by internal rust in older homes
- A low-pressure (gravity or valve-fed) hot water cylinder
- A blocked or failing pressure reducing valve
- Debris in tap aerators, mixer cartridges or shower heads
- A hidden leak bleeding off pressure
- Homes on elevated sites, or on tank supply with an undersized pump
Pressure versus flow
Pressure is how hard the water is pushing. Flow is how much actually comes out. A house can have good static pressure at the meter and still have a poor shower because the pipe is too narrow or partly blocked, so flow collapses when you open a tap.
That is why we test both. We take a static reading with everything off, then measure flow and pressure with fixtures running. If the drop happens between the meter and the house, the service pipe is the suspect and may need a water main repair. If it happens at one fixture, the problem is local to that tap or valve.
How It Works
Hot side weaker than cold
If only your hot water is weak, the cylinder is usually the reason. Many older Auckland homes still have low-pressure cylinders fed through a header tank or pressure reducing valve, which deliver a fraction of mains pressure. Mixing that with full-pressure cold water at a mixer tap or shower causes weak, uneven flow.
Options include balancing the cold supply to match, fitting a valve to equalise pressures, or upgrading to a mains pressure cylinder. We explain the trade-offs, including cost, before you decide.
What affects the cost
What it costs to fix depends on what we find:
- Simple fixes such as clearing aerators or opening a valve fully
- Replacing a pressure reducing valve or isolation valve
- Replacing a section of narrowed or damaged service pipe
- Installing a pressure pump for low supply or tank water
- Upgrading from a low-pressure to a mains pressure cylinder
When the problem is on Watercare's side
Watercare owns the network up to the outlet of your meter, so if pressure is already low at the meter, the issue may be theirs. We give you the readings so you can raise it with them.
It is also worth knowing that too much pressure causes problems of its own, from dripping relief valves to water hammer. AS/NZS 3500.1, which sits behind the NZ water supply rules, limits static pressure at outlets inside buildings to 500 kPa. If we find pressure well above that, we will recommend a pressure limiting valve rather than leaving it.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Low Water Pressure
Measured, not guessed
We take static and running pressure and flow readings at the boundary and at each fixture, so the fix targets where the drop actually happens.
Overnight peak readings
Where pressure seems to vary, we can log peak pressure overnight to catch surges a daytime reading misses, before deciding on a pump, a pressure limiting valve or both.
Readings you can give Watercare
If pressure is already low at the meter, we give you the readings to raise with Watercare rather than charging for work on their side.
Cheapest fix first
A half-closed toby or clogged valve gets fixed before anyone talks about pumps, new pipe or a cylinder upgrade.
Price agreed upfront
Any repair is priced and agreed before we start.
Low Water Pressure FAQs
Why has my water pressure suddenly dropped?
A sudden drop often means a leak, a valve that has been knocked partly closed, or work on the Watercare network. Check with neighbours first, then call us if theirs is fine.
Is low pressure the council's fault?
Sometimes, but more often the cause is on your side of the meter. We test at the meter to show which side the problem is on.
Why is only my hot water weak?
Usually because you have a low-pressure hot water cylinder or a failing valve on the hot side. Balancing valves or a mains pressure cylinder can fix it.
Will a new shower head fix low pressure?
Only if the old one is blocked. If the supply itself is weak, a new head will not help much.
Can a pump improve my pressure?
If your supply is genuinely low, such as on a hill or on tank water, a properly sized pressure pump makes a big difference.
Can water pressure be too high?
Yes. High pressure wears out tapware and hoses and can make cylinder relief valves drip. Over 500 kPa at outlets is above the AS/NZS 3500.1 limit.
