Most gas appliances fail in a handful of predictable ways: the spark stops reaching the burner, the safety device that proves a flame is present wears out, a jet or burner port clogs, or a regulator drifts out of pressure. Each one shows up differently, and a good repair starts with working out which it is rather than swapping parts until something works.
We repair gas hobs, ovens, califonts and continuous flow heaters, gas fires and wall heaters, and outdoor BBQ connections across Auckland, on natural gas and LPG. Repairs are done by licensed gasfitters, tested before we leave, and certified as the regulations require.

- Burners that light then go out when you let go of the knob
- Pilot lights on fires and older water heaters that will not stay lit
- Ovens that will not hold temperature or shut down mid-bake
- Califonts and continuous flow units showing an ignition or flame error code
- Weak, uneven or lifting flames after a gas bottle change
- BBQ bayonet points that leak, stick or will not accept the hose
Ignition, thermocouples and flame failure devices
When a burner clicks and does not light, the cause is usually a worn or wet igniter, a cracked electrode, a faulty spark generator, or a burner cap sitting out of place. When it lights and then drops out, the suspect is the flame safety device. On many hobs, ovens and fires this is a thermocouple: a small probe that sits in the flame and holds the gas valve open only while it stays hot. Thermocouples weaken with age and dirt, and once they cannot prove the flame, the appliance shuts off the gas, which is exactly what it is designed to do.
We test the parts rather than guess, replace them with genuine or approved equivalents, and check the gas pressure at the appliance so the new part is not masking a supply problem.
How It Works
Yellow flames, soot and carbon monoxide
WorkSafe lists a yellow flame instead of a blue one, soot in or around the appliance, and a smell like car exhaust as signs that an appliance is not working correctly or its flue is blocked. Some flame-effect fires are designed to burn yellow, so it is the change from normal that matters. WorkSafe also warns about light back, where the flame burns inside the burner, with roaring noises, odd smells or the flame vanishing from the burner surface.
Any of these can mean carbon monoxide, which causes headaches, nausea, dizziness and tiredness and can kill at high levels. Turn the appliance off, ventilate the room and book a repair. If you can smell raw gas rather than exhaust, treat it as a leak and see our gas leak repairs page for what to do first.
Who is allowed to repair gas appliances
Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act 2006, gasfitting must be done by a person authorised by the PGDB. WorkSafe says this covers pipework, appliances and flues, and any additions or alterations, and advises asking to see the gasfitter's current practising licence ID card. Once the work is connected, a Gas Safety Certificate has to be issued within 20 working days to confirm the installation is safe to use.
That rules out a general handyman pulling apart a gas valve or regulator. Wiping a burner cap is fine; anything that opens the gas side is gasfitting. Our gasfitters carry their licence cards and leave the certificates with you.
Repair or replace?
A good hob or fire with a failed thermocouple or igniter is almost always worth repairing. It gets harder to justify when parts are no longer made, the heat exchanger or burner body is corroded, the appliance is an old unflued heater, or it keeps failing. We give you the repair price and, where it makes sense, the replacement option, then let you decide. New cooktops and ovens are covered on our gas cooktops and ovens page.
What affects the cost
The price depends on the appliance and brand, the part needed and whether we carry it on the van or have to order it, how easy the appliance is to access, and whether the gas supply or regulator also needs work. WorkSafe recommends flame-effect heaters and LPG cabinet heaters are serviced every year and other space and water heaters at least every two years, so if a service is overdue we can do it on the same visit.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Appliance Repairs
Diagnose before replacing parts
We test igniters, thermocouples and gas pressure first, so you pay for the part that is actually faulty.
Licensed, carded gasfitters
Every repair is done by a PGDB-authorised gasfitter who can show a current licence card and issues the required gas certification.
Carbon monoxide checked
We look at flame quality, flues and ventilation on every appliance we repair, not just the part you called about.

Gas Appliance Repairs FAQs
Why does my gas hob click but not light?
Usually a dirty or wet igniter, a misplaced burner cap, a cracked electrode or a weak spark module. If it lights with a match but not the igniter, the gas side is probably fine.
Why does my burner go out when I let go of the knob?
That points to the flame failure device, often a thermocouple, which shuts the gas when it cannot sense a flame. It is a common and fairly quick repair.
Is a yellow flame dangerous?
On a hob, oven or water heater it can mean poor combustion and carbon monoxide. Turn it off and have it checked. Some decorative fires are meant to burn yellow.
Can I repair a gas appliance myself?
No. Any work on the gas side must be done by a gasfitter authorised by the PGDB, and it must be certified.
Do you repair califonts and continuous flow heaters?
Yes. We read the error code, then check ignition, flame sensing, filters and gas supply.
Can you fix my outdoor BBQ gas point?
Yes. We repair or replace leaking and sticky bayonet fittings and test the connection for leaks.
