When a drain keeps blocking, smells, or leaves a soggy patch on the lawn, the pipe itself is usually damaged. Roots have opened a joint, the ground has moved and cracked the pipe, or a section has collapsed. Clearing it again only buys time. The fix is to repair or replace the damaged section.

Cheeky's Plumbers repairs residential and commercial drains across the region. Every repair starts with a CCTV drain inspection so we know exactly where the damage is and how long it runs, which means smaller excavations, more accurate quotes and fewer surprises. Quotes are free, and drainlaying work is carried out by drainlayers authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Drain Repairs Jobs We Handle Across Auckland

  • Drain repairs
  • Sewer line repair
  • Collapsed drain repair
  • Cracked clay pipe replacement
  • Pipe bursting
  • Root-damaged drains

Signs your drain needs repairing, not just clearing

Some symptoms point clearly to a damaged pipe rather than a simple blockage:

  • The same drain blocks again within weeks or months of being cleared
  • A wet, sunken or unusually lush strip of lawn along the drain route
  • Sewage smell outside with no obvious blockage
  • Cracks in paths or driveways that follow the line of the drain
  • Rats around the property, which can enter through broken drains
  • Camera footage showing cracks, displaced joints or a collapsed section

Repair options, from a patch to full replacement

The right repair depends on what the camera shows. A single cracked joint might only need a short section dug up and replaced with new PVC. A longer run of root-affected earthenware might be better suited to pipe relining from the inside. A badly collapsed or sagging line that holds water usually has to be replaced, because relining follows the shape of the old pipe, sag and all.

We will explain each option with the price side by side. Sometimes the cheapest repair today is not the cheapest over ten years, and you should be able to see that clearly before deciding. Smaller faults at the surface, such as a cracked or sunken gully trap, are covered by our gully trap repairs.

What affects the cost of a drain repair

Every drain repair is quoted for free after a camera inspection, because two jobs that look alike from the surface can be very different underground. The main cost factors are:

  • Depth of the pipe and the length of the damaged section
  • What sits on top: lawn, garden, concrete driveway, deck or building
  • Ground conditions, including Auckland's volcanic rock and heavy clay
  • Whether the drain is shared with neighbours or near a public sewer
  • Building consent requirements for the scope of work
  • Reinstatement of concrete, paving or landscaping afterwards

Auckland ground conditions and drains

Auckland is a hard city to dig in. Large parts of the isthmus, around Mt Eden, Epsom, Mt Albert and Three Kings, sit on basalt from the volcanic field, which can mean breaking rock by hand or machine to reach a drain. Elsewhere, expansive clay soils swell in wet winters and shrink in dry summers, which bends and cracks rigid pipes over time.

These conditions are part of why so many older Auckland drains fail at the joints, and why the repair method matters. In rock, a no-dig method can save a great deal of time and cost. In clay, flexible modern joints cope with movement far better than the mortar joints they replace.

Compliance and paperwork

Drainlaying is restricted work in New Zealand. It must be done or supervised by someone authorised by the PGDB, and you can check any tradesperson on the public register. Depending on the scope, a drain repair may need a building consent and an inspection by Auckland Council before the trench is backfilled.

When the work is finished we provide the documentation you need, including as-built details for council records. That paperwork matters when you sell, because a buyer's lawyer or building inspector may ask for it.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Drain Repairs

Camera first, smaller digs

Every repair is planned from camera footage and a locator, so we dig only where the damage is and quote accurately.

Options priced side by side

Patch repair, relining or full replacement are laid out with prices together, so you can compare the cost today against the cost over ten years.

Built for Auckland ground

We choose methods that suit basalt and expansive clay, using no-dig relining where rock makes digging slow and flexible modern joints where the ground moves.

Consent and as-built paperwork

Work is done by PGDB-authorised drainlayers, with council inspections booked where needed and as-built details provided for your records.

With video records

You get photo and video records of the pipe before and after.

Drain Repairs FAQs

How much does a drain repair cost in Auckland?

It depends on depth, access, ground conditions and the repair method, so we quote each job for free after a camera inspection. Short shallow repairs in a lawn are at the low end; deep repairs under concrete or in rock cost more.

Do I need a building consent to repair a drain?

Some like-for-like repairs may not, but larger work and new or altered drainage usually does. We check this for your specific job and handle the application when one is needed.

Can you repair a drain without digging?

Often, yes. Relining and pipe bursting both avoid a full trench. Whether they suit your drain depends on its condition, shape and the ground around it, which the camera tells us.

Who pays if my drain is shared with neighbours?

Shared private drains are usually the joint responsibility of the properties using them. The camera footage shows where the damage is, which helps owners agree on cost.

How long does a drain repair take?

A simple section replacement is often done in a day. Larger repairs, rock excavation or work needing council inspection can take longer.

Is my drainlayer licensed?

You can check anyone on the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board public register. Drainlaying in New Zealand is restricted work and must be done or supervised by an authorised person.
