Most drain problems happen out of sight, under lawns, driveways and floors. Without a camera, a plumber is guessing at what is wrong and where. A CCTV drain inspection sends a waterproof camera on a flexible rod through the pipe so we can see cracks, root intrusion, sagging sections, displaced joints and old repairs, and record exactly where each one sits.
You get the recording, a short written summary and, where needed, the fault marked on the ground with a locator so any repair digs in the right place the first time.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

When a camera inspection is worth doing
Camera work is not only for emergencies. The most useful inspections are often the ones done before money is spent:
- Before buying a house, especially a villa, bungalow or 1960s to 1970s home with original drains
- When a drain has blocked more than once and you want to know why
- Before a renovation, extension or new driveway goes over an existing line
- To get accurate quotes for repair or relining, rather than estimates
- When an insurer or body corporate wants evidence of the drain's condition
- After a new build, to confirm the line was left clean and undamaged
What the camera picks up
A good inspection shows more than whether a pipe is blocked. We look for root intrusion at joints, cracked or broken pipe, sections that have sagged and hold water (called bellies), joints that have shifted out of line, collapsed sections, pipe material changes, and illegal or unexpected connections.
The pipe material matters in Auckland. Earthenware with mortar joints is common in pre-1960s housing and is prone to root entry. Some mid-century homes have pitch fibre or asbestos cement drains. Newer homes are almost all PVC. Knowing what you have changes which drain repairs or pipe relining options are on the table.
How It Works
Pre-purchase drain inspections
A standard pre-purchase building report looks at what an inspector can see. Drains are underground, so they are often left out or only noted as 'not inspected'. Yet a broken sewer line under a driveway can be one of the more expensive surprises a new owner inherits.
If you are buying an older property, particularly one with large trees, a sloping section or obvious earlier drain work, a camera inspection before you go unconditional gives you real information. If there is a problem you can negotiate on price, ask the vendor to fix it, or walk away. If the drains are fine, you have footage on file for the future.
Cost of a CCTV drain inspection
The price depends on the length of the line, how many branches need inspecting, whether the drain must be cleared first so the camera can pass, and whether you want the fault located and marked on the ground.
If the line is blocked when we arrive, we clear it with a drain machine or hydro jetting before inspecting and tell you the combined price before we start. For pre-purchase inspections we work to your settlement timeframes.
Reading the results
Footage on its own can be hard to interpret. We talk you through what we saw, in plain language, and separate faults that need action now from ones to keep an eye on. A small hairline crack in an otherwise sound PVC pipe is a very different thing from a joint packed with roots in an old clay line.
Where the fault is on Watercare's side of the connection, the footage is your evidence. Watercare is responsible for the public network upstream of the joint where your pipe meets theirs, so a recording showing the fault location saves an argument.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for CCTV Drain Inspection
Footage plus a plain summary
You keep the recording and a short written summary that separates faults needing action now from ones to watch.
Faults marked on the ground
We locate each fault and mark it on the surface, so any repair digs in the right place the first time.
Clear first, then inspect
Our vans carry jetters as well as cameras, so a blocked line is cleared and inspected on the same visit, with the combined price agreed first.
CCTV Drain Inspection FAQs
How much does a drain camera inspection cost in Auckland?
Longer lines, multiple branches or a blocked drain that needs clearing first add to the price.
Should I get the drains inspected before buying a house?
For older homes, homes with large trees, or any property with signs of past drain work, it is worth it. A pre-purchase building report rarely covers what is underground.
Do I get a copy of the footage?
Yes. You get the recording and a short summary of what we found and where, which you can share with your lawyer, insurer, body corporate or another tradesperson.
Can the camera find exactly where the problem is?
Yes. The camera head carries a transmitter, so we can trace it from above ground and mark the location and approximate depth of a fault before anyone digs.
How long does an inspection take?
Most residential inspections take about an hour on site. Larger properties, commercial lines or drains that need clearing first take longer.
Will a camera inspection damage my pipes?
No. The camera travels on a flexible rod and does not cut or scrape. If a pipe is badly broken, we stop before the camera gets caught.
