A historic village core with 1880s buildings, now surrounded by the masterplanned Millwater development where most homes date from the 2010s. Rainwater tanks do two very different jobs in Auckland. In the city, they cut demand on the mains for gardens, toilets and laundry, and help during summer water restrictions. On lifestyle blocks and islands without a reticulated supply, the tank is the water supply, and it has to be reliable and safe to drink. We supply and install water tanks across Auckland: we help you pick the size and material, set the base, and plumb in the pump, first-flush diverter, filters and overflow so the tank works from day one.

Silverdale rainwater tanks: Millwater sections and rural blocks on the Weiti

Silverdale has two very different kinds of tank customer. In Millwater, the masterplanned development of about 260 hectares where most homes date from 2010 to 2019, houses are on the town supply and tanks are for gardens, toilets and laundry. On the lifestyle and rural land around the village and up the Weiti River valley, some properties rely on tank water for everything, including drinking.

In Millwater the constraints are space and covenants. Sections are smaller than older suburbs, and many have tidy, landscaped yards with limited room down the side of the house. Slimline tanks along a fence or beside a garage usually fit. Developer covenants on masterplanned subdivisions can also have rules about what can be placed on a section and where, so it is worth checking yours before ordering. Because the homes are newer, spouting and downpipes are usually in good order, which makes connecting a tank straightforward.

Millwater's streets fall down north-facing slopes toward the Ōrewa estuary. On that fall, the tank sits on a cut and compacted pad, and its overflow is piped into stormwater so nothing spills toward the section below.

On rural blocks, the tank is the water supply, and the design follows. We size the tank for summer, fit a reliable pump and pressure tank, and set up treatment in the right order: leaf guards and a first-flush diverter, then an inlet that does not stir the floor sludge and an intake that draws from just below the surface, with filters and a UV unit on the pressure side. If you have bought an established block, ask the previous owner or check the property file for when the tank was last cleaned.

Wherever the tank is going, we check Auckland Council's consent conditions first. Outdoor-only tanks that meet them may not need consent, while tanks feeding internal plumbing usually do.

Local tip: Check your Millwater covenant for rules on structures and placement before buying a tank, and keep the overflow running to stormwater on sloping sections.

Water Tanks Silverdale FAQs

Do Millwater covenants affect where I can put a rainwater tank?

They can. Masterplanned subdivisions often have covenants covering what can be placed on a section. Check yours, and we will work out a position that fits the rules and the plumbing.

Do I need backflow protection if my tank has a mains top-up?

Yes. Any connection between a tank and the mains needs the right backflow protection to protect the public supply.

Can I drink rainwater from my tank?

It can be made safe with good roof and tank maintenance, a first-flush diverter, filtration and UV treatment.
