Plumbing emergencies rarely happen at a convenient time. A flexi hose lets go under the vanity on a Sunday night, a hot water cylinder starts pouring through the hallway ceiling, or the gully trap backs up just before guests arrive. When that happens you need two things fast: the water stopped, and someone qualified on the way.
Our emergency plumbers cover the whole of Auckland, from the Hibiscus Coast to Pukekohe and out to Waiheke on request. You pay for the repair, and you agree that price before we pick up a tool.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

What counts as a plumbing emergency
If water is going somewhere it should not, such as burst pipes or a leaking cylinder, or you have lost a service your household needs, treat it as urgent. Small drips can usually wait for a booked visit. These cannot:
- A burst or split pipe, or water spraying from a fitting
- Water coming through a ceiling, light fitting or wall lining
- Sewage or wastewater rising in a shower, bath or gully trap
- A toilet that keeps overflowing when flushed
- Hot water cylinder leaking from the base or relief valve pouring
- A smell of gas near a hob, fire or water heater (leave the house and call from outside)
What to do in the first five minutes
Turn the water off at the toby. In most Auckland homes it sits in a small plastic or concrete box near the front boundary, beside the Watercare meter. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. If you have an internal isolation valve on the cylinder or under the sink, close that too.
If water is near light fittings or power points, switch off that circuit at the switchboard. Move rugs and electronics, take photos for your insurer and put towels down. If the leak is on the street side of your meter, it belongs to Watercare, not you, and they should be called instead of a private plumber. We will tell you on the phone if that looks likely.
How It Works
How we handle an emergency call
When you ring, a person picks up, not a voicemail. We ask a few quick questions, walk you through isolating the water or gas, and dispatch the closest available plumber. You get their name and an estimated arrival by text.
On site, the first job is making it safe: stop the leak, protect the area and check nothing electrical is at risk. If the leak is hidden in a wall or slab, we use leak detection gear before anyone cuts in. Then we diagnose the cause and give you a fixed price for the repair. If a permanent fix needs parts we do not carry, we make a temporary repair so you have water overnight and come back with the right gear.
What affects the cost of an emergency job
The repair price depends on what we find, and we tell you that price before we start. The main things that move it are:
- Time of day: after-hours and public holiday work carries a higher rate, and we tell you the rate on the phone
- Access: a pipe under a suspended timber floor is quicker to reach than one in a concrete slab or behind tiles
- Parts: a flexi hose or valve is on the van, a full cylinder may not be
- Whether a temporary repair is needed tonight and a permanent one tomorrow
Common Auckland emergencies
Every part of the city has its own patterns. Older villas and bungalows in Ponsonby, Grey Lynn and Devonport often still have sections of galvanised pipe that corrode from the inside and let go without warning. 1970s and 1980s homes across the North Shore and West Auckland can have grey polybutylene pipe with ageing fittings. Newer townhouses in Hobsonville and Flat Bush tend to fail at flexi hoses and push-fit joints in tight cupboards.
Heavy rain events also bring a spike in overflowing gully traps, where stormwater gets into the wastewater system or tree roots have already narrowed the drain. If that happens, keep water use to a minimum until we arrive, then we clear the blocked drains and find what caused the overflow.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Emergency Plumber
A person answers, 24/7
Real people pick up day and night, talk you through isolating the water or gas, and text you the name of the plumber on the way.
Fixed price, even after hours
We diagnose first, then give a fixed price. Where the scope genuinely cannot be known, such as a leak inside a slab, we price the finding stage first and quote the fix once we can see it.
Stocked vans, fewer return trips
Vans carry drain cameras, jetters and locators, and if a part is not on board we make a temporary repair so you have water overnight.
Vans across Auckland
With vans based across the North Shore, West, Central and South Auckland, we dispatch the closest available plumber.
Emergency Plumber FAQs
Is it more expensive at night or on a public holiday?
There is an after-hours rate. We tell you what it is on the phone before we dispatch, so there is no surprise on the invoice.
Where is my toby and how do I turn it off?
Usually in a small box near your front boundary next to the water meter. Turn the valve clockwise. If it is seized or you cannot find it, call us and we will talk you through other options.
The leak is at the meter. Is that my problem?
Watercare owns the meter and the pipe up to the meter outlet. Anything on your side of that point is yours. If the leak is on their side, call Watercare.
Will my insurance cover an emergency plumbing job?
Many policies cover sudden water damage, but the repair to the failed pipe itself may or may not be covered. We give you photos and a written report so you can make the claim.
Can I just use any handyman in an emergency?
Sanitary plumbing is restricted work in New Zealand and must be done by someone authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Unlicensed work can also put your insurance at risk.
