A gas hot water cylinder heats and stores a tank of water with a gas burner under the tank, ready for the next shower or load of dishes. Because the burner needs no mains power to run on many models, hot water keeps coming when the power goes out, which is one reason Auckland homes on reticulated natural gas still choose a gas storage cylinder.
We install and replace gas storage cylinders, convert electric cylinders to gas, and help you work out whether gas is the right fuel at all. Every job is done by a certifying gasfitter and finished with a Gas Safety Certificate and a Certificate of Compliance, so the installation is on record and safe to use.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Gas, electric or heat pump: choosing the fuel first
Before we talk models, it is worth being straight about the trade-offs. The government's Smarter Homes guide notes that gas storage cylinders lose more heat than electric cylinders, and that instant gas systems are more efficient than gas cylinders. Gen Less says a heat pump water heater costs more to buy and install but is the cheapest option once running costs are counted, and uses less energy than gas water heating.
Gas storage still makes sense in plenty of homes: where natural gas is already at the meter, where a family wants a big reserve of hot water, where the cylinder must keep working through power cuts, or where the existing gas cylinder simply needs replacing like for like. If you want to compare, we can also quote heat pump hot water or a continuous flow unit on the same visit.
Indoor and outdoor gas storage cylinders
Outdoor gas cylinders sit against an exterior wall with the flue built in, so they free up the hot water cupboard and keep combustion outside. Rheem's Stellar outdoor range, for example, comes in 130 and 160 litre sizes and needs no electricity to run. Indoor gas cylinders go in a cupboard or garage and need a flue taken through the roof or wall.
Fuel matters here. Many domestic gas storage cylinders sold in New Zealand, including Rheem's Stellar outdoor and indoor gas storage ranges, are built for natural gas only. If your street has no reticulated gas and you rely on LPG bottles, the choice narrows and a continuous flow heater is often the practical option. We confirm the gas type before you commit to a model.
How It Works
Flue clearances and where the cylinder can go
A gas water heater has to get rid of its combustion products safely. Flue terminals need set distances from openable windows, doors, air inlets, gas meters and electricity meters. NZS 5261 used to set these rules; it has been replaced by AS/NZS 5601.1, and manufacturers such as Rinnai publish their own clearance tables based on it, which can be stricter for fan-assisted appliances.
On tight Auckland sites this decides a lot. Townhouses with narrow side yards, villas with sash windows close to the old cylinder spot, and units under a deck or carport all need checking before we pick a location. We measure on site rather than guessing from photos.
Converting from electric to gas
Swapping an electric cylinder for gas usually means running a gas line from the meter or bottles, fitting the new cylinder and flue, reconnecting the hot and cold pipework, and leaving the old electric circuit safe for your electrician to terminate. If the new cylinder goes outside, the old cupboard becomes storage.
We check the gas meter and pipe size can carry the extra load on top of your hob or heater, and set the cylinder so stored water is heated to at least 60°C to control Legionella. Delivered water to basins, baths and showers in new installations is capped at 50°C, which is the job of a tempering valve on the hot line.
Signs your gas cylinder is due for replacement
Gas cylinders give some warning before they fail completely. Book a check if you notice any of these:
- Water pooling under the cylinder or rust at the base
- Hot water running out sooner than it used to
- A pilot light that keeps going out
- Soot, scorching or a yellow flame at the burner
- Rumbling or popping noises as the burner fires
- A cylinder more than 10 years old with no service history
What affects the cost
We give a free quote after seeing the site. Price depends on the cylinder size, indoor or outdoor model, natural gas or LPG, how far the gas line has to run, any flue work through a roof, whether the old cylinder is in a hard-to-reach cupboard, and any pipework changes for a conversion.

Gas Hot Water FAQs
Is a gas hot water cylinder cheaper to run than electric?
It depends on your gas and power prices and how much hot water you use. Gas cylinders lose more standing heat than electric ones, so we compare your actual tariffs before recommending one.
Can I put a gas cylinder on LPG bottles?
Some commercial models run on LPG, but many domestic gas storage cylinders in New Zealand are natural gas only. On LPG, a continuous flow heater is often the better fit.
Does a gas hot water cylinder work in a power cut?
Many do. Models like Rheem's Stellar outdoor range need no electricity, so you keep hot water when the power is off.
How long does a gas cylinder replacement take?
A like-for-like swap is usually done in a day. Conversions from electric, or new flue work, can take longer.
Do gas water heaters need servicing?
Yes. WorkSafe advises servicing gas water heaters at least every two years by an authorised person.
Will I get a gas certificate?
Yes. All our gas hot water work comes with the Gas Safety Certificate and Certificate of Compliance the regulations require.
