A cylinder that is leaking from the tank, rusting through or simply cannot keep up with the household is not worth throwing more repairs at. Replacing it is the chance to fix what annoyed you about the old one: weak showers, running out of hot water, or a unit that takes up half the laundry.
We replace electric and gas storage cylinders in homes right across Auckland. You get a clear quote, a cylinder sized for how your household actually uses water, a tidy install that meets the Building Code.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

When it is time for a new cylinder
Consumer NZ estimates a cylinder's life at around 10 to 15 years. Age alone is not a reason to replace, and many faults are a straightforward hot water repair, but these signs usually mean it is time:
- Water leaking from the tank shell rather than a valve or fitting
- Rust-coloured hot water or flakes coming through the taps
- The household has grown and the cylinder runs out every evening
- You want mains pressure showers instead of a low pressure header tank system
- Repeated repairs in the last few years on the same unit
- Renovating and moving the cylinder out of a cupboard you want back
Choosing the right replacement
The main decisions are pressure, size and fuel. Mains pressure cylinders are now the main type installed in New Zealand homes and give strong, even showers, but older pipework in some villas and bungalows needs checking before it is put under mains pressure. Low pressure cylinders are cheaper to swap like for like and gentler on old pipes.
For size, we ask how many people live in the house, how many showers run at once and whether you have a big bath. A cylinder that is too small runs out; one that is too big wastes power keeping water hot you never use. If you are on gas, we also look at whether a gas storage unit, continuous flow or a heat pump water heater makes more sense for your home before you commit.
How It Works
What is included in a replacement
A proper install is more than swapping the tank. We drain and remove the old cylinder, fit the new one with new valves (expansion control, pressure limiting where the maker requires it, temperature and pressure relief, and a tempering valve so hot water at bathroom fixtures stays within Building Code limits), connect the drain lines so discharges go somewhere safe, and restrain the cylinder against earthquakes. We commission it, check the temperature at the taps, and remove the old unit.
What affects the price
Every replacement is quoted after we have seen the site. The main things that move the price are the cylinder type and capacity, converting from low pressure to mains pressure, how hard the old cylinder is to get out (upstairs cupboards and ceiling spaces take longer), extra framing needed for seismic straps, and any electrical work required for a new element or circuit.
We put the full price in writing before we book the job, so there are no surprises on the day.
Auckland installs: what we watch for
Auckland homes throw up their own problems. Villa cupboards are often too small for a modern mains pressure cylinder of the same capacity. Townhouses built in the last decade can have cylinders in tight spaces above garages, where drain lines and access need careful planning. Leaky-building era homes need extra care around any wall penetrations so we do not create a new moisture path.
We also check the incoming water pressure. Some parts of Auckland have high mains pressure, and the cylinder maker's pressure limits decide whether a pressure limiting valve is needed.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Hot Water Cylinders
Sized on a site visit
We size the cylinder from how many people live in the house, how many showers run at once and whether there is a big bath, not from a guess over the phone.
Seismic restraint every time
G12/AS1 sets out restraint for storage water heaters, so every cylinder we fit is strapped into the framing, and we check the strapping on any older cylinder while we are there.
Old pipes checked first
Before a villa or bungalow goes onto mains pressure, we check the existing pipework and fittings can take it.
Valves fitted, taps tested
New valves, a tempering valve and safe drain lines go in with the cylinder, and we measure the temperature at the taps before we leave.
Price in writing, old unit gone
The full price is agreed in writing before we book the job, and removing the old cylinder is part of it.
Hot Water Cylinders FAQs
How long does a hot water cylinder replacement take?
A like-for-like swap is usually done in a day. Upgrading from low pressure to mains pressure, or moving the cylinder, can take longer, and we tell you when we quote.
Can I upgrade from low pressure to mains pressure?
Usually yes. We check the existing pipework first, because some older pipes and fittings are not suited to mains pressure and may need replacing.
Do new cylinders need earthquake straps?
Yes. G12/AS1 sets out seismic restraint for storage water heaters, and we restrain every cylinder we install.
What size hot water cylinder do I need?
It depends on how many people live in the house and how many showers run at once. We size it on a site visit rather than guessing.
Will you take the old cylinder away?
Yes, removal of the old cylinder is part of the job.
