A blocked drain rarely fixes itself. Water that sits in a shower tray or creeps up around the gully trap is a sign that something further down the line has given way, collapsed or filled up. The longer it sits, the more likely you are to end up with wastewater on the floor, a smell through the house or a soaked section.
Cheeky's Plumbers clears blocked drains in homes, flats and businesses right across the city, from the North Shore to Papakura and out to the west coast. We tell you the price before we touch anything, we find out why it blocked as well as clearing it, and if the line needs a repair the unblock comes off the bill.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs you have a blocked drain, not just a slow plug hole
A single slow basin is usually hair or soap close to the waste. When several fixtures play up together, the problem is in the shared pipe further down. These are the signs worth acting on quickly: If the drain is still flowing but slow or smelly, routine drain cleaning is usually the better booking.
- Water rising in the shower or bath when the toilet is flushed
- Gurgling from the basin or the gully trap after the washing machine empties
- The outside gully trap overflowing or leaving a ring of debris around the grate
- A sewage smell inside, often worst in the bathroom or laundry
- Toilet bowl filling higher than normal before slowly dropping
- Wet, sunken or unusually green patches of lawn along the drain line
What usually causes blocked drains in Auckland homes
Most of the blockages we clear come down to a handful of causes. Wet wipes and paper towels are the big one in blocked toilets, because they do not break down the way toilet paper does. In kitchens it is fat and food scraps that set hard once they cool in the pipe.
Outside, tree roots are the main culprit. Older Auckland suburbs such as Mt Eden, Grey Lynn, Devonport and Onehunga have a lot of earthenware drains with mortar joints, and roots from established trees find those joints within a few years. Clay soils that swell in winter and shrink in summer also move pipes out of alignment, which leaves a lip where waste catches. Newer subdivisions have their own issue: building debris, concrete slurry and offcuts left in the line during construction.
How It Works
How we clear the blockage
We start at the easiest access point, normally the gully trap or an inspection cap, so we are not pulling up a toilet unless we need to. For most domestic blockages an electric drain machine with the right cutting head clears the line in one visit. Where grease or roots have packed the pipe solid we switch to hydro jetting.
Once water is flowing we run a test flush through the affected fixtures and, if the cause is not obvious, run a CCTV drain inspection. A drain that keeps blocking is telling you something. Clearing it without looking is how people end up paying for the same callout three times.
What a blocked drain costs
That covers a straightforward domestic blockage cleared from an accessible point. If we find a broken or root-filled pipe and you go ahead with drain repairs, we waive the unblocking charge entirely.
The price moves with access (a drain under a deck or behind a retaining wall takes longer), the type of blockage (roots and set fat take more work than a wipe), and whether a camera inspection is needed to find the cause. Whatever the job, you get the price before we start, not an hourly meter running while you watch.
Your side of the boundary, and Watercare's
In Auckland the pipes on your property are your responsibility, and the public sewer is Watercare's. Where the public pipe runs through your section, the dividing line is the joint where your pipe connects to theirs. If our camera shows the blockage is in the public main, we will tell you, give you the footage and point you to Watercare so you are not paying for their fix.
Shared private drains are common on cross-leased sites and in older flats. If the blockage is in a section several households use, the cost is normally shared, and our footage makes that conversation easier.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Blocked Drains
Fixed price before we start
We only come back with a fresh quote if we uncover something like a collapsed pipe.
Cameras and jetters on board
Our vans carry drain machines, jetters, drain cameras and locators, so we can clear the line and find out why it blocked on the same visit.
Footage you keep
You get photos and video of the drain, which show whether the fault is yours or Watercare's and make shared-drain conversations with neighbours easier.
Blocked Drains FAQs
Can I use drain cleaner from the supermarket?
For a slow basin it can help. For a fully blocked line it usually just sits on top of the blockage, and caustic products can damage older pipes and make the job harder for whoever clears it. Avoid using them before we arrive.
Why does my gully trap keep overflowing?
Either the trap itself is full of debris, or the drain past it is blocked by roots, fat or a broken section. A trap that overflows repeatedly needs the line checked with a camera, not just cleared.
Is a blocked drain an emergency?
If wastewater is coming up inside the house or the only toilet is out of action, yes. Stop running water in the house and call us. A slow shower can usually wait for a booked visit.
Who pays if the blockage is in the public sewer?
Watercare looks after the public wastewater network. If our camera shows the problem is on their side of the connection, we will give you the footage so you can report it to them.
Do wet wipes really cause blockages if they say flushable?
Many of them do. They are built to hold together when wet, so they snag on joints and roots and collect everything else. Bin them instead.
