Water hammer is the bang, knock or shudder you hear when flowing water is stopped suddenly. Water is heavy and does not compress, so when a valve slams shut the moving column has nowhere to go. The pressure spike travels back along the pipe, and if that pipe is loose, it slaps against framing, floor joists or another pipe.
It is more than a noise problem. Repeated shocks work joints loose, wear out appliance valves and flexi hoses, and can eventually cause a leak in a spot you cannot see. The good news is that most cases have a clear cause and a tidy fix.

What the noise is telling you
Different sounds point to different causes, so it helps to note when it happens:
- A single loud bang when the washing machine or dishwasher stops filling
- Knocking when someone flicks a mixer tap off quickly
- A machine-gun rattle from a toilet cistern as it finishes refilling
- Banging under the floor that seems to come from the whole house
- A steady hum or groan while a tap is running
- Noise that is worse late at night, when mains pressure is often higher
Common causes in Auckland homes
Fast-closing valves are the usual trigger. Level, BRANZ's sustainable building site, lists lever taps with ceramic disc cartridges, washing machine solenoid valves, spring-closing valves and pumps as typical sources. Modern appliances shut their inlet valves in a fraction of a second, which is why an older house can start banging the day a new dishwasher goes in.
Pipe fixing is the other half of the story. Many villas, bungalows and 1950s to 1970s homes have copper or galvanised pipe running under suspended timber floors, held by a few clips that have rusted, loosened or gone missing. A shock that would be silent in a well-clipped pipe becomes a bang when the pipe can swing into a joist. Level notes water hammer mostly occurs in metal pipe, though plastic pipe can also be affected.
High pressure and fast flow make everything worse. The faster the water travels, the bigger the surge when it stops.
How It Works
How we stop it
We start by reproducing the noise. We run each fixture and appliance, shut it off sharply and listen, then check the static pressure at the meter. From under the house or in the ceiling space we look at how the pipes are fixed and where they touch the structure.
The fix is matched to the cause. Loose runs get re-clipped with rubber-lined clips, and grommets or cushioned packers go in where pipes pass through framing. Where a particular appliance is the trigger, we fit a water hammer arrestor on the supply just upstream of it. Arrestors use a sealed air or gas cushion behind a piston to absorb the surge. If the problem is a worn tap cartridge or a chattering cistern valve, replacing that part often solves it, and our tap and mixer repairs team can do that on the same visit.
When pressure is part of the problem
Auckland mains pressure varies a lot with location and height. Level notes it can be up to 900 kPa or more in a few places, and suggests a licensed plumber can fit a 350 kPa pressure limiting valve where high pressure is driving the noise, after checking it suits your fittings. Homes in low-lying streets near supply points are the usual candidates.
We will tell you honestly whether pressure is a factor. If it is, a properly sized pressure reducing valve treats the whole house rather than one appliance. If your pressure is normal, we will not sell you a valve you do not need. Homes on tank water can also get water hammer from a pump that stops and starts too often, which points to the pump or pressure vessel instead.
What affects the cost
The final price depends on:
- How many fixtures or appliances are causing the noise
- Access to the pipes, from an open subfloor to a low crawl space or a finished ceiling
- Whether the fix is clips and packers, an arrestor or both
- Whether a pressure reducing valve is needed for the whole house
- Replacing worn tap cartridges or cistern inlet valves at the same time
Noise in new builds and renovations
Water hammer is not only an old-house issue. In newer townhouses in areas like Hobsonville, Flat Bush and Millwater, pipes in walls and between floors can carry noise into bedrooms if they were fixed tight to studs without cushioning. After a renovation, a new laundry or kitchen can bring fast-closing valves into a house whose pipework was never set up for them. If you are planning a dishwasher or washing machine install, we can fit an arrestor at the same time.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Water Hammer
We find the trigger first
We test fixtures one at a time and check mains pressure, so the repair targets the actual cause. You do not pay for an arrestor on every tap when one loose run under the floor is to blame.
Subfloor and ceiling work
Our plumbers work under villas and bungalows every day and re-clip pipe properly with cushioned clips and packers, not cable ties.
Pressure measured, not guessed
We take a reading at the meter and show you the number before recommending any pressure reducing valve.
Fixed price
The price is agreed before work starts, every fixture is retested before we leave.
Water Hammer FAQs
Is water hammer dangerous?
Not immediately, but the repeated shocks loosen joints and wear appliance valves and hoses. Left long enough, it can cause a hidden leak.
Why did my pipes start banging after I got a new washing machine?
Modern machines shut their inlet solenoid very quickly. If your pipes are loose or your pressure is high, that sudden stop creates a bang the old machine never did.
Can I stop water hammer myself?
You can check for loose clips you can reach and close taps more gently. Fitting arrestors or pressure valves on your water supply needs a licensed plumber.
What is a water hammer arrestor?
A small fitting with a sealed cushion of air or gas behind a piston. It absorbs the pressure spike when a valve closes, so the shock does not travel along the pipe.
Why are my pipes noisier at night?
Demand on the network drops overnight, so mains pressure often rises. Higher pressure makes the surge from a closing valve stronger.
Do plastic pipes get water hammer?
Less often than metal, but yes. Plastic pipe can still move and knock if it is not well supported.
