A burst pipe can put a lot of water into a house very quickly. Whether it is a split copper line in the ceiling, a perished flexi hose under the kitchen sink or a cracked fitting under the floor, the priority is the same: shut the water off at the toby, then get a licensed emergency plumber in.
We repair the failed section properly, check the pipe either side of it, and tell you honestly whether it was a one-off or a sign the rest of the system is on borrowed time.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Why pipes burst in Auckland
In colder parts of the world, frozen water is the classic cause. In Auckland that is rarely the story. The causes we see are almost all about age, pressure and movement:
- Galvanised steel pipe rusting through from the inside in older homes
- Grey polybutylene pipe and its fittings ageing in 1970s and 1980s houses
- Flexi hoses under sinks and toilets corroding or kinking until the braid lets go
- High mains pressure without a pressure limiting valve, stressing joints
- Ground movement on clay soils and tree roots putting load on buried service pipes
- Nails or screws driven through a pipe during renovation work
Our repair, step by step
First we make sure the water is off and the area is safe, including any electrics near the leak. Then we cut out the damaged section and replace it with the correct material for your system, whether that is copper, PEX or a transition between old and new pipe.
Before we restore the water, we pressure test the repair and inspect the run either side of it. If the pipe beyond the burst is thin, corroded or brittle, we show you and explain your options. Some customers want just the repair today. Others prefer repiping the whole run while access is already open.
How It Works
Insurance and burst pipes
Many house policies cover sudden water damage from a burst pipe, though cover for the failed pipe itself and the excess you pay vary between insurers. What insurers want is evidence: when it happened, what failed and what it damaged.
We give you dated photos of the failure, the repair and the affected area, plus a written description of the cause. NZ plumbers have reported some insurers declining claims after a second burst on old polybutylene pipe, so if you have had more than one, ask your insurer where you stand and talk to us about replacing the pipe.
What affects the cost
The final price depends on:
- Where the pipe is: under a timber floor, in a ceiling, behind tiles or under concrete
- Pipe material and size, and whether an adaptor to newer pipe is needed
- After-hours or public holiday attendance
- How much of the pipe needs replacing once we see its condition
- Making good, such as refitting a vanity or replacing a ceiling panel
After the repair: drying out and prevention
Wet framing, insulation and carpet underlay need to dry properly or they cause mould later. If a lot of water has gone into ceilings or walls, your insurer may send a drying company with dehumidifiers and moisture meters. Keep the area ventilated in the meantime.
To lower the chance of a repeat, we can fit a pressure limiting valve if your mains pressure is high, replace older flexi hoses with new rated ones, and make sure every fixture has an isolation valve you can reach.

Burst Pipes FAQs
What should I do first when a pipe bursts?
Turn the water off at the toby, switch off power to any wet area, and call a plumber. Then move valuables and take photos.
Will my insurance cover a burst pipe?
Most policies cover sudden water damage. Whether the pipe repair itself is covered depends on your policy. We provide photos and a report to support the claim.
Why did my pipe burst when it is not cold?
In Auckland, bursts are usually caused by age, corrosion, high water pressure, ground movement or damaged flexi hoses rather than freezing.
Can you repair just the broken bit?
Yes, in most cases. If the surrounding pipe is in poor condition we will show you and explain whether replacing more makes sense.
How long does a burst pipe repair take?
Most accessible repairs are done in one visit. Pipes in slabs or behind tiled walls take longer because of access.
Do I need to replace all my old pipes?
Not always. If the house has galvanised or grey polybutylene pipe and has had more than one burst, a partial or full repipe is often the better long-term option.
