When a house sits below the public sewer, gravity cannot carry wastewater away, so it drains into a sealed tank with a pump that lifts it up to the network. You will find these private pump stations on low sections, sites that fall away from the street, basement flats and some newer subdivisions. While the pump runs nobody thinks about it. When it stops, the tank fills, the alarm sounds, and you have a limited time before wastewater backs up.

Signs your pump station needs attention
Most pump stations give some warning before they fail. Call us if you notice:
- The high-level alarm light or buzzer going off
- The pump running constantly, or cycling on and off every few minutes
- Humming with no water moving, or a grinding noise
- Sewage smell around the lid or vent
- Toilets and showers draining slowly with no blockage found
- The circuit breaker tripping when the pump starts
What usually goes wrong
Float switches are the most common failure. They tell the pump when to start and stop, and once they stick, tangle or fill with fat, the pump either never starts or never stops. Next is rag build-up: wipes, sanitary products and paper towels wrap around the impeller and stall the motor. Watercare notes that these private systems can be damaged by non-flushable items, which is one reason the owner, not Watercare, is responsible for them.
Other common faults are failed non-return valves letting the rising main drain back into the tank, corroded cables and control boxes, and pumps that have simply reached the end of their life. A pump that works far harder than it should can point to stormwater getting into the tank, which needs to be found and sent to stormwater drains instead.
How It Works
Who is responsible in Auckland
On low-lying sites, Watercare sometimes approves pressure wastewater systems, where each house has its own grinder pump feeding a small pressurised main. Watercare's guidance is clear that the onsite grinder pump is owned and maintained by the property owner, with Watercare ownership starting at the boundary, where a boundary kit lets the pump be isolated. The same applies to an ordinary private pump station pumping to a gravity sewer: everything on your side is yours to maintain.
Watercare's guidance also says the storage tank should hold at least 24 hours of wastewater for a power cut or maintenance, and that in a long outage the wastewater has to be tankered away. If your power is off, use as little water as possible until it is back. New pump stations are only approved where gravity is not practical, so if you are planning a subdivision or extension, talk to us early about drainlaying options.
Sump pumps for stormwater
Not every pump handles sewage. Sump pumps lift stormwater and groundwater out of basements, sunken courtyards, retaining wall drains and driveways that fall towards the garage. They suit Auckland's sloping sites in places like Titirangi, Remuera and the East Coast Bays, where water collects at the low point of the build.
A stormwater sump pump must discharge to the stormwater system, never to a gully trap or the sewer. Watercare points out that stormwater entering the wastewater network can overload it and cause overflows. We size sump pumps for the catchment, fit a float and, where it protects a living space, an alarm.
Servicing, repair and replacement
A service covers lifting and hosing the pump, clearing rag from the impeller, testing floats and the alarm, checking the non-return valve and isolation valves, inspecting cables and the control panel, and looking at the tank for cracks and fat build-up. Annual servicing suits most homes; busier systems such as flats or a home business may need it more often.
When a pump is beyond repair we replace it like for like, or upgrade to a better-suited pump or a dual-pump arrangement where the load justifies it. If the tank needs pumping out first, we organise that.
Pump station cost
Every pump station is different, so we give a free quote. Price depends on the type of pump (sewage, grinder or stormwater sump), whether the tank needs pumping out before we can work, access to the lid, the condition of floats, valves and controls, and whether a repair or a full replacement makes more sense. You get the fixed price before work starts.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Wastewater Pump Stations
Drainlayers and plumbers together
Pump stations sit between plumbing, drainage and electrics. Our PGDB-registered drainlayers handle the tank, rising main and connections, so one team owns the whole fix.

A real person answers day and night. We talk you through reducing water use while a technician is on the way.
Find the cause, not just the clog
We check what is reaching the tank, from wipes to stormwater, and use our drain cameras on the incoming line when the pump is being overworked.
Service records you can keep
Each visit comes with a photo and video report of the pump, floats and tank, handy for body corporates, landlords and future buyers.
Wastewater Pump Stations FAQs
What should I do when my pump station alarm goes off?
Stop using water straight away: no showers, laundry, dishwasher or flushing. Check the pump's circuit breaker, then call us. The tank has some spare storage, but not unlimited.
Who maintains a grinder pump in Auckland?
The property owner. Watercare's guidance says onsite grinder pumps on pressure wastewater systems are owned and maintained by the owner, with Watercare's responsibility starting at the boundary.
How often should a private pump station be serviced?
Once a year suits most homes. Higher use, a history of rag build-up or a commercial kitchen calls for more frequent servicing.
What happens to my pump station in a power cut?
The pump stops. Keep water use to a minimum. Watercare's guidance is for tanks to hold at least 24 hours of storage, and in a long outage the tank may need to be pumped out by a tanker.
What is the difference between a sump pump and a sewage pump?
A sump pump moves stormwater or groundwater to the stormwater system. A sewage or grinder pump moves wastewater to the sewer. They are not interchangeable and must not be cross connected.
Can I flush wipes with a pump station?
No. Wipes and sanitary products wrap around the pump impeller and are one of the main reasons private pumps fail early.
