The oldest housing in the city: colonial and Victorian villas near the centre, interwar bungalows further out, large state housing areas from the late 1930s to 1950s, and apartment towers in and around the CBD. Rainwater tanks do two very different jobs in Auckland. In the city, they cut demand on the mains for gardens, toilets and laundry, and help during summer water restrictions. On lifestyle blocks and islands without a reticulated supply, the tank is the water supply, and it has to be reliable and safe to drink. We supply and install water tanks across Auckland: we help you pick the size and material, set the base, and plumb in the pump, first-flush diverter, filters and overflow so the tank works from day one.
Fitting a rainwater tank into a central Auckland section
On the central isthmus the hard part of a rainwater tank is rarely the plumbing. It is the space. Colonial and Victorian villas near the city centre and interwar bungalows further out often sit on narrow sections with a driveway down one side and little room between the house and the boundary. Slimline tanks along a side fence, under a deck or tucked beside a garage are the usual answer, and sizing becomes a trade-off between what fits and what the roof can deliver.
Older roofs are worth a look before connecting a tank. Villa and bungalow roofs have often been replaced at least once, but spouting, flashings and downpipes can still be original or patched. A tank collects whatever comes off the roof, so we check the spouting condition and fit leaf guards and a first-flush diverter as part of the job. If the downpipes are corroded or undersized for the extra flow, that gets fixed at the same time.
Ground conditions vary block to block. Much of the isthmus is lava and scoria from cones such as Maungawhau / Mount Eden and Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill, which gives a firm base for a tank but can make trenching for pipes slow work. Elsewhere, drained swamps left pockets of soft ground, and a heavy tank there needs a proper pad.
For apartment buildings and body corporate properties, a tank on common property needs the body corporate's agreement before anything is ordered. For houses, an outdoor-only tank that meets Auckland Council's exemption conditions may not need consent, while one that feeds toilets or the laundry usually does. With town water in every central street, most tanks here serve gardens, toilets and laundry rather than drinking.
Local tip: On a narrow villa section, measure the side path with the gate open before choosing a slimline tank, because it still has to be carried in.

Water Tanks Central Auckland FAQs
Can I put a rainwater tank at my Grey Lynn villa when there is only a narrow side path?
Usually, yes. Slimline tanks are made for narrow spaces along fences and walls. We measure access, check the spouting and downpipes, and confirm the consent position before you buy.
Do I need backflow protection if my tank has a mains top-up?
Yes. Any connection between a tank and the mains needs the right backflow protection to protect the public supply.
Can I drink rainwater from my tank?
It can be made safe with good roof and tank maintenance, a first-flush diverter, filtration and UV treatment.
