Pipe relining puts a new pipe inside the old one. A flexible liner soaked in resin is fed into the damaged drain through an existing access point, pressed against the old pipe wall, and cured hard. The result is a smooth, jointless pipe with no gaps for roots to get into, and in most cases nobody has to dig a trench.

Cheeky's Plumbers relines residential and commercial drains across Auckland. It is often the best option where the damaged pipe runs under a concrete driveway, a deck, a mature tree, a neighbour's property or part of the house, where digging would be slow, disruptive and expensive to put back. Every relining job starts with a camera inspection and a free quote.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

When relining makes sense

Relining is a good fit when the pipe is still in roughly the right shape but leaking or letting roots in. Typical cases include:

  • Earthenware drains with root intrusion at several joints
  • Cracked pipe under driveways, paths, patios or buildings
  • Drains under protected or mature trees you want to keep
  • Lines on shared or neighbouring property where digging is complicated
  • Heritage villas and bungalows where disturbance must be kept down
  • Drains that need frequent jetting to stay open

When relining is the wrong answer

A liner takes the shape of the pipe it sits in. If the old pipe has sagged and holds water, the new liner will hold water too. If a section has fully collapsed, there is nothing for the liner to follow. In those cases a dig-and-replace repair, or pipe bursting, is the right call, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a liner that will not fix the problem.

Relining also narrows the internal diameter slightly. On standard domestic lines that rarely matters, but we check it on long or low-fall runs.

How It Works

Camera inspection to confirm the pipe is suitable for lining
Free quote, compared with dig-and-replace where realistic
Jet the line clean and cut back roots
Install and cure the resin liner
Reopen branch connections from inside the pipe
Final camera inspection and footage handed over

How the relining process works

We clear the line first, usually with a hydro jetter, because the liner needs a clean surface to bond to. Roots are cut back to the pipe wall. A camera inspection then measures the exact length and diameter of the section to be lined.

The liner is cut to length, saturated with resin and inserted into the pipe, either by turning it inside out under air pressure (inversion) or by pulling it into place and inflating a bladder inside it. The resin is then cured, using heat, ambient curing or UV light depending on the system. Finally, any branch connections are reopened from inside with a cutting tool, and a second camera run confirms the result. You get before and after footage.

Cost of pipe relining in Auckland

Relining is quoted for free after a camera inspection. The price depends on the length of the section, pipe diameter, the number of branch connections to reopen, how much root and debris clearing is needed first, and access to the line.

Per metre, relining can cost more than open trenching in a soft lawn. The saving comes from what you do not have to pay for: breaking and replacing concrete, rebuilding a deck, rock excavation, or relandscaping. We price both options when they are realistic so you can compare the total cost, not just the pipe.

Relining in Auckland conditions

Auckland's older suburbs are full of earthenware drains with mortar joints, and the city's trees have been finding those joints for decades. Relining seals every joint along the lined section in one go, which is why it suits root problems so well. In volcanic areas where the drain sits in basalt, avoiding excavation can save a large part of the cost of a repair.

Relining work on private drains is carried out by authorised drainlayers, and we will confirm whether your job needs consent before any work starts.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Pipe Relining

Camera first, footage after

Every relining job starts with a camera inspection and finishes with a second camera run, and you get the before and after footage.

Honest about when not to line

If the pipe has sagged or collapsed, a liner will not fix it, so we quote a dig-and-replace repair or pipe bursting instead.

Both options priced

Where trenching is realistic we price it alongside relining, including concrete, decks and landscaping, so you compare the total cost.

Realistic design life

We quote conservative design life figures rather than marketing numbers, and only line pipes the camera shows are sound enough.

Drainlayers and consent handled

Relining on private drains is done by authorised drainlayers, and we confirm whether consent is needed and provide the paperwork for council.

Pipe Relining FAQs

What is no-dig pipe relining?

It is a way of repairing a drain by installing a resin-soaked liner inside the existing pipe and curing it hard, creating a new jointless pipe without digging a trench.

How long does a relined pipe last?

US municipal sources give cured-in-place pipe a design life of around 50 years. Some manufacturers claim more, but we stick to the conservative figure.

How much does pipe relining cost in Auckland?

It depends on length, diameter, access and the number of branch connections. We quote for free after a camera inspection, and compare it with digging where both options are realistic.

Can relining fix a collapsed drain?

Not usually. A liner needs the old pipe to hold its shape. Collapsed or badly sagging sections normally need to be dug up and replaced.

Will roots grow through a relined pipe?

The liner has no joints for roots to enter along the lined section, which is why relining is a common fix for root-affected earthenware drains.

How long does relining take?

A short residential section can often be cleaned, lined and inspected in a day. Longer runs or lines with several branches take more time, and we confirm the timeframe in the quote.
