A gas fire turns on with a button and heats a living room in minutes, without the firewood, ash or council rules that come with a wood burner. Done right, it is clean and safe. Done wrong, a badly flued fire or a neglected heater can put carbon monoxide into the house.
We install inbuilt and freestanding flued gas fires, convert old open fireplaces to gas, and service and repair gas heaters across Auckland. Our certifying gasfitters handle the gas supply, flue, commissioning and certification, so the only thing left for you to do is choose the flame.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Types of gas heating we install

- Inbuilt flued gas fires set into a wall or cavity
- Gas inserts that go into an existing open fireplace and use a liner in the chimney
- Freestanding flued gas fires with a visible flue
- Flued wall heaters for bedrooms and smaller living areas
- Outdoor gas fires and heaters for decks and covered patios
Flued versus unflued heaters
A flued appliance sends its combustion products outside through a flue. An unflued appliance, like a portable LPG cabinet heater, releases them into the room. WorkSafe advises against using unflued gas appliances in small rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms, and says they should only be used in well-ventilated areas. Energywise recommends keeping a window open when one is running. Unflued heaters also add a lot of moisture to the air, which is the last thing a damp Auckland house needs in winter. For a permanent heat source we install flued appliances.
How It Works
Servicing and repairs
Gas fires and heaters need periodic servicing to stay safe and efficient. A service typically includes cleaning the burner and pilot assembly, checking ignition and the flame supervision device, inspecting the flue and terminal for blockages such as birds' nests, checking the glass seal on inbuilt fires, measuring gas pressure and checking for leaks. If you notice soot, a yellow lazy flame, a pilot that will not stay lit or a smell when the fire runs, turn it off and book in for gas appliance repairs before using it again. If you smell gas with the fire off, leave the room and call for gas leak repairs.
What affects the cost
Installation costs depend on the appliance, the length and route of the flue, whether an existing chimney needs a liner, building work around an inbuilt fire, and how far the gas supply needs to run. Some flue installations need building consent, and we tell you upfront if yours does.
Auckland homes and gas heating
Many Auckland villas and bungalows have old brick chimneys with open fireplaces that lose more heat than they make. A gas insert with a flue liner turns that into useful heat. Newer homes and townhouses often suit a flued wall heater or an inbuilt fire on an outside wall. Every installation is certified, and a registered gasfitter must install the heater, as Energywise points out.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Fires
Flued heaters for permanent heat
For a permanent heat source we install flued appliances only, which keep combustion products and moisture out of a damp Auckland living room.
Gas, flue and certificate covered
Certifying gasfitters handle the gas supply, flue and commissioning, issue the Gas Certificate of Compliance and tell you upfront if the flue needs consent.
Old chimneys put to work
In villas and bungalows we fit gas inserts with flue liners into existing brick chimneys, turning a draughty open fireplace into useful heat.
Safety-first servicing
Services cover the burner, pilot, flame supervision device, flue terminal, glass seal, gas pressure and a leak test.
Carbon monoxide alarm advice
A CO alarm is recommended rather than required, but we suggest one with any indoor gas fire and show you the best spot near bedrooms and living areas.
Gas Fires FAQs
Are unflued gas heaters safe?
WorkSafe says unflued gas appliances should not be used in small rooms, bedrooms or bathrooms and only in well-ventilated spaces. For permanent heating we recommend flued appliances.
Can you convert my open fireplace to gas?
Often yes, using a gas insert and a flue liner in the existing chimney. We check the chimney condition first.
How often should a gas fire be serviced?
A regular check every year or two is sensible, and immediately if you see soot, a yellow flame or a pilot that will not stay lit.
How much does it cost to install a gas fire in Auckland?
Full installations depend on the appliance and flue, and we quote in writing after a site visit.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fire?
We recommend one for any home with indoor gas appliances as an extra layer of safety.
Can I run a gas fire on LPG?
Yes. Many gas fires are available in LPG versions, and we size the bottle setup to suit.
