Patch repairs, like a single burst pipe repair, make sense for a one-off failure. They stop making sense when you are calling a plumber every few months, the water runs brown after a holiday, or the shower drops to a trickle every time the washing machine fills. At that point the pipe itself has reached the end of its life.

We replace old water supply pipe in Auckland homes and small commercial buildings, either the whole system or just the worst sections. Every repipe starts with a free inspection and a written, fixed quote, so you know the full cost before deciding.

Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Signs your home needs repiping

No single symptom proves the whole system is failing, but a combination of these usually does:

  • Leaks in different places over the past year or two
  • Rusty or discoloured water, especially first thing in the morning
  • Poor pressure at every tap, not just one
  • Galvanised steel pipe visible under the house or in the ceiling
  • Grey or black plastic pipe with crimped fittings, typical of polybutylene
  • An insurer asking questions about the age of your plumbing

Old pipe types in Auckland homes

Galvanised iron pipe with screwed fittings was common in older New Zealand houses before copper took over. It corrodes from the inside, narrowing the bore and eventually rusting through, which is why pre-war villas and bungalows often have both low water pressure and pinhole leaks.

Polybutylene arrived in the 1970s and was widely used through the following decades. Build magazine notes that old polybutylene will not necessarily fail, and suggests replacing the accessible runs in the roof space and subfloor first, leaving concealed wall runs until redecorating. That staged approach is often the most cost-effective path for 1970s and 1980s homes.

Not sure if it is a repiping job?Describe it in chat. We will tell you what it likely needs and what it should cost.

How It Works

Free inspection of pipe type, condition and access
Written fixed quote with whole or partial options
Route planned to minimise wall and floor openings
New pipe installed, with water restored each evening
Full system pressure tested before closing up
Access points made good and records handed over

Whole-house or partial repipe

A whole-house repipe replaces everything from the toby to every fixture, hot and cold. It suits homes with galvanised pipe throughout or repeated failures in several places. A partial repipe targets the problem sections: the main supply line from the boundary, the subfloor runs, or the hot water lines from the cylinder.

We normally use PEX or copper, chosen to suit the house, the water supply and your budget. New pipe is run along the most practical route, through the subfloor or ceiling where possible, so wall access is kept to small openings at each fixture.

What affects the cost of a repipe

Every repipe is quoted for free after an inspection, because houses differ so much. The main cost drivers are:

  • Size of the house and number of bathrooms, kitchens and laundries
  • Floor type: suspended timber floors are far easier to work under than concrete slabs
  • Ceiling access, especially in skillion roofs and two-storey homes
  • Pipe material and whether the main service line from the road is included
  • Making good, such as plastering and painting access points

Living through a repipe

Most households stay at home during the work. We plan the job so the water is back on at the end of each day, protect floors and furniture, and keep dust down when we open walls.

Once the new pipe is in, the whole system is pressure tested before anything is closed up. For work that needs a building consent, we handle the paperwork. You get a record of what was installed and where, which is useful when you sell or insure the house.

Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Repiping

Inspection before any quote

We check pipe type, condition and pressure before recommending a whole or partial repipe. The written price is fixed and agreed before work starts.

Staged repiping where it fits

In 1970s and 1980s polybutylene homes we can replace the roof space and subfloor runs first and leave concealed wall runs until you redecorate.

Flame-free PEX or copper

We use PEX with flame-free fittings or copper, from systems approved for New Zealand drinking water, run through the subfloor or ceiling to keep wall openings small.

Water back on each night

We plan the job so you have running water at the end of each day, and pressure test the whole system before anything is closed up.

Records for sale and insurance

You get a record of what was installed and where, consent paperwork where the job needs it.

Repiping FAQs

How do I know what pipe my house has?

Look under the house or in the ceiling near the cylinder. Grey steel with threaded joints is galvanised. Grey or black plastic with crimped rings is often polybutylene. We can confirm it during a free inspection.

How long does a repipe take?

It depends on the size of the house and access. Many three-bedroom homes take a few days, and we give you a timeline with the quote.

Can I stay in the house during the work?

Yes. We restore water at the end of each working day.

Which pipe is best for repiping in New Zealand?

PEX and copper are both proven. We recommend one based on your house, budget and water supply, and only use products approved for NZ drinking water.

Do I need a building consent to repipe?

Some plumbing work needs consent and some is exempt. We check your job and handle any consent needed.

Can I repipe in stages?

Yes. Many owners replace accessible subfloor and ceiling runs first, then the in-wall sections when renovating a bathroom or kitchen.
