Cooks love gas for the instant control. But a gas cooktop or oven is not a plug-in appliance: it has to be connected by a certifying gasfitter, set up for the right gas type, tested for leaks and correct burner pressure, and certified before you use it.
We install and replace gas cooktops, freestanding cookers and gas wall ovens across Auckland, from a straight swap of an old cooktop to a full new gas supply for a renovated kitchen. We work alongside your kitchen company or builder so the gas point ends up exactly where the cabinetry needs it.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Getting the details right
Most problems with gas cooking come from installation shortcuts. Each appliance is built for a specific gas type and pressure, so an LPG cooktop on natural gas, or the reverse, will burn badly or not at all. Burner pressure has to be checked and set. Clearances to rangehoods, overhead cupboards and side walls must follow the manufacturer's instructions and the gas standards, otherwise heat damages the cabinetry. And the gas connection has to be accessible enough to isolate if the appliance ever needs servicing.
We check all of this, then light every burner, check flame quality, test the flame failure devices that cut the gas if a flame goes out, and leak test the connection. If you ever smell gas near an existing cooker, turn it off at the isolation valve and call us for gas leak repairs.
How It Works
Ventilation and rangehoods
Burning gas produces combustion products, so extraction matters more over a gas cooktop than over induction. A rangehood that vents outside does a better job than a recirculating one. If you are renovating, plan the rangehood duct route and the kitchen plumbing at the same time as the gas point. We can advise on the gas side and the clearances, and work with your electrician or kitchen installer on the rest.
Price guide
A straight swap on an existing gas point sits at the lower end. Jobs that need new pipe, a moved gas point, a bigger supply for a high-output cooker or an LPG conversion kit cost more, and we quote those in writing first. Faulty burners, igniters and oven thermostats on an existing appliance are covered under gas appliance repairs.
Auckland kitchens
In villas and bungalows, the gas usually comes up through the floor from underneath, which makes moving the point fairly easy. On concrete slabs, moving the point can mean chasing a wall or running pipe through the ceiling. Many Auckland apartments and some townhouse complexes restrict gas, so check your body corporate rules before buying a gas cooker. If you are on LPG, we check the bottles and regulator can supply a large cooker alongside your other gas appliances.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Gas Cooktops & Ovens
Certified on the day
A certifying gasfitter connects, tests and certifies the appliance, and you get a Gas Certificate of Compliance before you start cooking.
Set up for your gas type
We confirm the appliance suits natural gas or LPG, set burner pressure, and test every flame failure device and connection.
Anti-tilt bracket fitted
Every freestanding cooker we install gets its anti-tilt bracket fixed, so it cannot tip if a child stands on the open door, and we check for one when servicing.
Gas point placed for your cabinetry
We work with your kitchen company or builder so the gas point lands exactly where the cabinetry and appliance need it.
Gas Cooktops & Ovens FAQs
Can I install a gas cooktop myself?
No. Connecting a gas appliance is gasfitting and must be done by an authorised gasfitter with a gas certificate issued.
How much does it cost to install a gas cooktop in Auckland?
Moving the gas point or running new pipe costs more and is quoted first.
Can my LPG cooktop be converted to natural gas?
Some can, using the manufacturer's conversion kit. We check the model first.
Do I need a rangehood over a gas cooktop?
A rangehood that vents outside is strongly recommended to remove combustion products and cooking fumes. Check clearances in the manufacturer's instructions.
What is an anti-tip bracket?
A bracket fixed to the floor or wall that stops a freestanding cooker tipping forward if weight goes on the open oven door. We fit one with every freestanding cooker.
Can you swap my electric cooktop for gas?
Yes, if a gas supply is available or can be run to the kitchen. We quote the gas line and the connection together.
