Most people only think about their hot water system when it stops. By then a small drip has often become a failed valve, or a scaled element has burnt out. A service is a planned visit where a licensed plumber checks the parts that wear out and adjusts what has drifted, while everything is still working.
We service electric cylinders, gas storage water heaters, continuous flow units and heat pump systems across Auckland. You get a written note of what we checked, what we found and what, if anything, needs attention, so you can plan for it instead of reacting to it.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

Why servicing pays off
Valves on a mains pressure cylinder do real work every day. The expansion control valve opens each time the water heats, and the temperature and pressure relief valve is the last line of defence. Both wear. A tempering valve keeps the water at bathroom fixtures within safe limits, and if it sticks you can get scalding hot or lukewarm water. Catching these early is cheaper than an emergency call and better for the cylinder. If the cylinder has already stopped heating or is leaking, book hot water repairs rather than a service.
What a hot water service covers
What we do depends on the type of system, whether that is an electric cylinder, gas hot water or a heat pump, but a typical service includes:
- Testing the temperature and pressure relief valve and expansion control valve
- Checking the tempering valve and measuring water temperature at the taps
- Checking incoming pressure and the pressure limiting valve where fitted
- Inspecting the cylinder, fittings and drains for leaks or corrosion
- Checking seismic restraint is present and tight
- Gas units: cleaning the burner, checking ignition, flame and flue
- Continuous flow: cleaning inlet filters and checking for scale
- Heat pumps: cleaning filters and checking the outdoor unit and condensate drain
How It Works
Anode rods and steel cylinders
Many steel mains pressure cylinders have a sacrificial anode rod that corrodes so the tank does not. Once the anode is used up, the tank starts to go. A US manufacturer's manual we reviewed recommends removing and inspecting the anode annually and replacing it when more than six inches (about 150 mm) of core wire is exposed, and notes that softened water uses anodes up faster. Not every New Zealand cylinder has an accessible anode, and copper and stainless cylinders work differently, so we check what your cylinder has and follow the maker's instructions.
How often to service
As a rule of thumb, gas appliances benefit from a yearly check, while electric cylinders can often go longer between visits. Auckland's water is generally soft according to Watercare, but some groundwater supplies are moderately hard, and scale builds faster on those. If your relief valve drips constantly, your hot water temperature has changed, or the cylinder is over ten years old, book a service sooner rather than later.
Cost
If we find a part that needs replacing, we tell you the price before we fit it, and you can decide on the spot or later. If the cylinder itself is near the end of its life, we say so plainly and give you time to plan a replacement on your terms instead of on a cold Monday morning.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Hot Water Servicing
Valves tested, not just seen
We operate the relief and expansion control valves, check the tempering valve and measure the temperature at the taps, because these are the parts that wear.
Checked for your cylinder type
Copper, stainless and steel cylinders age differently, so we check for an accessible anode and follow the maker's instructions instead of a one-size flush.
Written service note
You get a note with photos of what we checked, what we found and what needs attention, so you can plan rather than react.
Parts priced before fitting
If a part needs replacing you get the price before we fit it.
Hot Water Servicing FAQs
How often should a hot water cylinder be serviced?
Gas systems benefit from a yearly check. Electric cylinders can often go longer, but should be checked if the relief valve drips constantly or the temperature changes.
Do I need to flush my hot water cylinder?
In soft-water parts of Auckland it is rarely needed. Where water is harder or sediment is present, we may recommend it.
What is a tempering valve and why test it?
It mixes hot and cold water so the water at bathroom fixtures stays within safe limits. If it sticks, you get water that is too hot or too cool.
How much does a hot water service cost?
Any extra parts are priced and agreed before we fit them.
Can you service gas continuous flow units?
Yes. Our certifying gasfitters service gas storage and continuous flow units, including burner, ignition and filter checks.
Will servicing extend the life of my cylinder?
Keeping valves in good order and, on steel cylinders with anodes, replacing the anode before it is used up helps protect the tank.
