Most housing dates from the rapid build-out of the 1990s and 2000s, after farmland held for an unbuilt state housing scheme was sold to private developers, alongside large commercial and retail areas. Rainwater tanks do two very different jobs in Auckland. In the city, they cut demand on the mains for gardens, toilets and laundry, and help during summer water restrictions. On lifestyle blocks and islands without a reticulated supply, the tank is the water supply, and it has to be reliable and safe to drink. We supply and install water tanks across Auckland: we help you pick the size and material, set the base, and plumb in the pump, first-flush diverter, filters and overflow so the tank works from day one.

Rainwater tanks for Albany homes: 1990s cladding, clay pads and garden supply

Albany is on Watercare's town supply, so a rainwater tank here is almost always about taking load off the mains: watering the garden, filling the toilets, running the washing machine and keeping a section green through a dry summer. Most of the houses around Albany Heights and Albany Village were built in the rapid growth of the 1990s and 2000s, and that era brings two things to plan around before a tank goes in.

The first is the cladding. Many homes from that period have monolithic plaster or similar cladding systems, where any new hole needs to be sealed with care. A tank that feeds toilets or the laundry needs a pipe back into the house, and if that pipe goes through the wall, the penetration has to be detailed and sealed so water cannot get behind the cladding. Where we can, we bring the supply in through the subfloor or a garage wall instead, which keeps holes in the plaster to a minimum.

The second is the ground. Albany's soils have been described as poor clay since long before the suburb existed, sitting over sandstone, mudstone and conglomerate. Clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so a full tank that weighs several tonnes needs a properly compacted base or a concrete pad, or it can settle unevenly and stress its fittings. On sloping sections near the Fernhill Escarpment, the pad also has to be cut level and drained.

Because a tank feeding internal plumbing usually needs consent, and topping up from the mains calls for backflow protection, we check the plan against Auckland Council's rules at the quote stage. On the semi-rural land north of Albany, where some homes drink tank water, the same visit can cover filtration and UV.

Local tip: On a monolithic-clad Albany home, ask for the tank supply pipe to enter through the subfloor or garage rather than a new hole in the plaster.

Water Tanks Albany FAQs

Can I put a rainwater tank on the clay at the side of my Albany house without a pad?

A small garden tank may sit on well compacted ground, but a larger full tank on Albany clay should have a prepared base or concrete pad so it does not settle unevenly as the clay moves.

Do I need backflow protection if my tank has a mains top-up?

Yes. Any connection between a tank and the mains needs the right backflow protection to protect the public supply.

Can I drink rainwater from my tank?

It can be made safe with good roof and tank maintenance, a first-flush diverter, filtration and UV treatment.
