A blocked toilet is one of the few plumbing problems that nobody can ignore, especially in a house with one bathroom. The good news is that most toilet blockages are inside the pan or the first metre of pipe, and they can be cleared in a single visit without lifting the toilet.
Cheeky's Plumbers unblocks toilets in homes, rentals, offices and cafés across Auckland. We work out first whether the problem is just this toilet or the drain the whole house shares, because the fix, and the price, are very different.
Pricing: quotes are free, and every job gets a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice.

- Toilet draining slowly
One toilet or the whole house?
This is the first question we ask, and you can usually answer it yourself. If only one toilet is slow and the basins, shower and gully trap outside are behaving, the blockage is in that toilet's trap or its short branch pipe. If the shower gurgles when you flush, a second toilet is also slow, or the gully outside is full, the blockage is further down in the shared line, and our blocked drains service is the right call.
Knowing this saves time and money. A single-toilet blockage is cleared at the pan. A whole-house blockage is cleared from an outside access point, often with a CCTV drain inspection afterwards to see what caused it.
What gets stuck in a toilet
The trap in a toilet pan is a tight S-shaped bend cast into the porcelain. Anything bulky that will not break down lodges at the top of that bend. The usual suspects:
- Wet wipes, including ones labelled flushable
- Too much toilet paper in one go, common with low-flow pans
- Sanitary products, cotton buds and dental floss
- Children's toys, toothbrushes and bottle lids
- Paper towels and tissues used when the roll runs out
- Hair ties, phone cases and other things that fall in by accident
How It Works
Wipes and Auckland's sewers
Wipes are by far the most common thing we pull out of a toilet. They are made to stay strong when wet, so they catch at the trap or at the pan connector and gather paper behind them. The problem does not stop at your house: Watercare has estimated that around 53 million wet wipes reach the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant each year, where they twist into ropes around the pumps. Watercare's advice is simple: only pee, poo and toilet paper should go down the toilet.
Older cisterns can use up to 12 litres a flush, while modern dual flush suites use 6/3 or 4.5/3 litres, according to BRANZ's Level guidance. That is good for your water bill, but it gives less push to a big load of paper, so flushing twice in a row is sometimes kinder than one big flush.
How we clear a blocked toilet
We start with a toilet auger, a short hand-turned cable with a protective sleeve that goes round the porcelain bend without scratching the glaze. It breaks up paper blockages and can hook out wipes and many solid objects. Plungers rarely shift a toy; the auger usually does.
If the toilet clears but drains slowly, we run a camera into the branch pipe behind the pan. For packed paper, scale or fat in that pipe, we use a small jetting nozzle through the pan or an access point, and for heavy build-up in the main line our hydro jetting gear takes over.
When the pan has to come off
Sometimes an object is wedged so firmly in the trapway that it cannot be pushed through or pulled back. A small car, a toothbrush or a stone often sits crossways in the bend. Then we turn off the water, unbolt the pan, lift it, and remove the object from the outlet side. We refit it with a new pan connector so it seals properly, and check the floor underneath.
If the pan is cracked, the floor is soft, or the toilet is old enough that a new one makes more sense, we will say so. Our toilet repairs team can supply and fit a replacement on the same visit.
Blocked toilet cost and what changes the price
The price rises if the blockage turns out to be in the shared drain, if the pan has to be lifted and refitted, if a camera inspection is needed to find a repeat cause, or if access is awkward, such as a wall-hung or back-to-wall pan. We agree the price before we start.
Why Choose Cheeky's Plumbers for Blocked Toilets
Pan-safe tools
We clear toilets with a sleeved toilet auger, not a bare drain cable, so the porcelain is not scratched or chipped while we work.
We find the real blockage
We check whether it is one toilet or the whole house before choosing a method, so you are not paying to clear the wrong pipe.
Camera for repeat blockages
A toilet that blocks every few weeks gets a camera look at the branch pipe and drain, with footage in your photo and video job report.
Answered 24/7

Blocked Toilets FAQs
Why does my toilet keep blocking?
Repeat blockages usually mean something is partly stuck in the trap, the branch pipe has a sag or rough joint, or the main drain is restricted. A camera inspection shows which.
My child flushed a toy. Can you get it out?
Usually, yes. Do not flush again. Many toys can be hooked out with a toilet auger; if it is wedged, we lift the pan and remove it from behind.
Should I keep flushing to clear a blocked toilet?
No. Each flush adds water to a bowl that cannot empty, and it can overflow onto the floor. Turn off the isolation valve behind the toilet if it keeps refilling.
Is a blocked toilet an emergency?
If it is the only toilet in the house, or water is overflowing, we treat it as urgent. A second toilet that is slow can wait for a booked visit.
Why does my new low-flow toilet block more than the old one?
It uses less water per flush, so large amounts of paper move less far. Flushing partway through, or using less paper at once, usually solves it.
How much does it cost to unblock a toilet in Auckland?
Lifting the pan or clearing a shared drain costs more, and we confirm the price first.
