Waste disposal units across the central isthmus: old drains, rock and apartment stacks

Central Auckland has the oldest drainage in the city, and that shapes disposal unit advice more than anything else. In villa streets around Grey Lynn, Mt Eden and Onehunga the kitchen often still discharges into earthenware with mortar joints, long flat runs and roots working in from established trees. Finely ground food is no trouble in a sound pipe, but in a tired one it settles at every lip and joint. The state housing areas built across the isthmus from the late 1930s to the 1950s sit between the two, often with a single clay run from the kitchen to the street that we check for sags and roots first. Ground is the second difference. Through Epsom, Mt Eden and much of the isthmus, lava and scoria sit close to the surface, so replacing a failed kitchen drain outside can mean breaking rock. That makes it worth getting the disposal side right from the start: correct fall from the sink, a sound trap, and no fat poured through the unit to harden further down.

Apartments around Queen Street, the CBD fringe and Newmarket are a different job again. A kitchen there usually joins a shared stack serving several floors, and some body corporates set their own rules about disposal units. We check those rules before quoting, keep the install inside the cupboard, and seal the outlet and dishwasher inlet carefully so nothing finds its way to the unit below. Many central households also use the council's kerbside food scraps bin now, so for some a replacement is a choice rather than a necessity, and we will talk that through honestly.
