The oldest housing in the city: colonial and Victorian villas near the centre, interwar bungalows further out, large state housing areas from the late 1930s to 1950s, and apartment towers in and around the CBD. We look after the plumbing side of septic systems: the pipes from the house to the tank, the tank itself, its baffles, lids and outlet filter, and the distribution lines to the field. For pump-outs we work with licensed suction truck operators, so you deal with one team and get one report.
Septic questions on the Auckland isthmus: old tanks, volcanic ground and sewered streets
Central Auckland is the one part of the region where a working septic system is genuinely unusual. The isthmus between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours was almost fully urbanised by the mid 20th century, so the villas of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn, the interwar bungalows of Mt Albert and Mt Roskill, the state houses built from the late 1930s and the apartment towers around the CBD all drain to Watercare's sewer. When septic work comes up here it is usually one of a few situations, and each one is handled differently.
The first is an old tank found during building work. Some early properties dealt with wastewater on site before the sewer arrived, and a disused chamber can turn up when a renovation, extension or new drain is dug. The normal practice is to confirm it is disconnected, have it pumped out by a licensed operator, then fill or remove it so it cannot collapse under a driveway or garden. A camera through the existing drains confirms that everything now runs to the public sewer.
The second is ground that makes any underground work slower. Large parts of the isthmus sit on lava and scoria from cones such as Mt Eden, One Tree Hill and Mt Wellington, with known lava caves under Mt Eden and Epsom. Between the flows are pockets of soft ground where old swamps were drained. Excavating to locate or decommission a tank can hit hard basalt in one corner of a section and soft fill in the other, so we probe and scan before committing to a plan.
The third is central Auckland owners with a bach or lifestyle property elsewhere in the region. We service those systems too, and the advice on this page about inspections, sludge levels and outlet filters applies there.
Local tip: If a renovation in an older central suburb uncovers a buried concrete chamber, stop work and get it checked, because an unfilled disused tank is a collapse risk.

Septic Tank Cleaning Central Auckland FAQs
We found an old concrete tank while extending our Mt Eden villa. What should happen to it?
Get it confirmed as disconnected from the house drains, pumped out by a licensed operator, then filled or removed. A drain camera check shows that the house now drains only to the public sewer.
Do you pump out septic tanks?
We arrange pump-outs with licensed suction truck operators and inspect the tank while it is empty, so the job is done properly in one visit.
How often should a septic tank be pumped?
It depends on the tank size and how many people live in the house. A common guide is every three to five years, with an inspection in between. We can tell you what suits your system after a look.
