The oldest housing in the city: colonial and Victorian villas near the centre, interwar bungalows further out, large state housing areas from the late 1930s to 1950s, and apartment towers in and around the CBD. New gas hob, outdoor barbecue point, gas hot water or a switch from bottles to reticulated gas: all of it needs a licensed gasfitter and the right certificate at the end.
From villa subfloors to apartment risers: gas work on the central isthmus
Central Auckland holds the city's oldest housing, and gas work changes from street to street. In Ponsonby and Grey Lynn, villas and bungalows on piles usually give us a crawl space to run new pipe from the meter to the kitchen without lifting a floorboard. Many of these houses had gas once for ranges and heaters that are long gone, so part of the job is finding and capping redundant pipe before a new line goes in.
Mt Eden and Epsom sit on lava and scoria from the volcanic cones. Trenching for a line to the street or a garden fire can hit solid basalt a short way down, so we walk the route before we quote. Sometimes going around rock, or running pipe above ground in protective sleeving where the rules allow, beats breaking through it. Pockets of soft, once swampy ground between the old lava flows bring the opposite problem, and pipe there needs good bedding so it does not settle.
In the CBD and around Newmarket, the job is usually inside an apartment building. Gas there often comes from a shared supply, and the body corporate sets rules for access, shut-offs and who can touch the risers. We arrange timing with building management, connect or move the appliance, and leave a certificate for the owner plus a copy for the building file. The state housing streets built from the late 1930s are different again: many never had gas, so a new hob or water heater there starts with planning a supply from scratch.
Local tip: Before a villa kitchen renovation starts, have someone check under the floor for old gas pipe so it can be capped or removed while the walls are open.
Gas Fitter in Central Auckland: Local Factors
Villas and bungalows sometimes have old gas pipework left from long-removed heaters or ranges. We check and cap any redundant lines and run new pipe under the floor so the original features of the house stay intact.

Gas Fitter Central Auckland FAQs
Does volcanic rock in Mt Eden or Epsom make a new gas line cost more?
It can. If the route crosses shallow basalt, trenching takes longer, so we check the ground before quoting and look for an easier route or above-ground sleeving where that is allowed.
Can you move my gas bottles?
Yes. We can relocate bottles to a more convenient or compliant spot, keeping the required distances from windows, doors and drains.
Can I do my own gas work, or does it need a gasfitter?
Yes. Gas work must be done by a licensed gasfitter, and certain work needs to be certified. DIY gas work is not allowed.
