The oldest housing in the city: colonial and Victorian villas near the centre, interwar bungalows further out, large state housing areas from the late 1930s to 1950s, and apartment towers in and around the CBD. Cheeky's Plumbers lays new wastewater and stormwater drains for homeowners, builders and developers across Auckland. We handle everything from a single new connection for a sleepout to the full drainage layout for a multi-unit subdivision, including the consent drawings, council inspections and as-built plans. All quotes are free and all work is carried out under PGDB authorisation.

Drainlaying on the isthmus: basalt trenches, swamp pockets and tight villa sections

No part of Auckland varies underfoot quite like the central isthmus, and that variation drives most of the cost and planning in a drainlaying job here. Around Mt Eden, Epsom and One Tree Hill, lava flows sit close to the surface, so a trench that would take a morning in clay can take days of rock breaking. On these sites we confirm the route and depth early, keep the run as short as the falls allow, and price the rock honestly rather than discovering it halfway through. Where fractured basalt drains freely, stormwater soakage can sometimes be part of the design, subject to council approval and testing.

Between the volcanic flows are pockets of soft ground left where swamps and wetlands were drained for farms and housing a century or more ago. Pipes laid in that material need firm bedding so they do not settle out of grade, and a trench there can fill with water in winter. We look at the ground on the day as well as the plans, because two sections on the same street can be completely different.

The other central challenge is space. In Grey Lynn and Ponsonby, infill behind an old villa often leaves room for little more than a mini digger down the side path, with the existing earthenware line, the gas, the fibre and a neighbour's fence all in the way. We request beforeUdig plans, trace private drains with a camera and locator, and hand-dig around anything close. Older sections here also commonly have public sewers running through back yards, so build-over and build-near approvals from Watercare come up often and are worth sorting before the design is final. As-built plans at the end mean the next owner is not left guessing where everything went.

Local tip: On a central Auckland section, ask for a rock allowance in your drainlaying quote if you are anywhere near one of the volcanic cones.

Drainlaying Central Auckland FAQs

Does building on the volcanic ground near Mt Eden make drainlaying more expensive?

Often, yes. Basalt close to the surface means rock breaking for the trench, which takes longer than digging clay. We price the likely rock up front and keep the drain route as short as the falls allow.

How long does drainlaying take on a new build?

A standard house is often a few days of on-site work across first fix and final connection, depending on ground, weather and inspection timing.

Can a plumber do drainlaying?

Drainlaying is a separate licensed trade in New Zealand. The work must be done or supervised by someone authorised by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board as a drainlayer.
