How to Unblock a Toilet (With or Without a Plunger)

How to, 6 min read. Published , updated .

Quick answer

To unblock a toilet, stop flushing, then use a flange plunger with firm push and pull strokes for 15 to 20 seconds at a time. No plunger? Squirt in dish soap, add a bucket of hot (not boiling) water from waist height and wait 15 minutes. If neither works, or other drains gurgle or the outside gully overflows, the blockage is in the drain, not the toilet.

A blocked toilet is one of the few plumbing jobs most people can fix themselves in a few minutes. The trick is knowing which method suits the blockage, and recognising quickly when the problem is not in the toilet at all.

This guide walks through the fastest fix, the options when you have no plunger, what to avoid, why some toilets keep blocking, and the point where it is time to stop and call for help.

How do you unblock a toilet fast?

The fastest way is a flange plunger, the type with a soft sleeve that folds out of the cup and seals inside the toilet outlet. A flat sink plunger slips on the curved porcelain and wastes your effort.

Work steadily rather than violently. The aim is to move water back and forth through the trap so the blockage breaks up, not to ram it further in.

  • Stop flushing. If the bowl is near the rim, turn off the stop valve behind the toilet
  • Lay old towels around the base
  • Seat the plunger over the outlet with the cup covered by water
  • Push gently first to expel air, then pump firmly for 15 to 20 seconds
  • Lift off and see if the water drops. Repeat three or four rounds
  • Once it drains, test with a half flush before a full one

How do you unblock a toilet without a plunger?

Without a plunger, hot water and dish soap clears most paper blockages. The soap lubricates the bend and the weight of the water does the pushing.

Pour a good squirt of dishwashing liquid into the bowl, then add a bucket of hot tap water from about waist height and leave it for 15 minutes. Do not use boiling water, because a sudden temperature change can crack a porcelain pan. Repeat once if the level drops slowly.

For something solid, such as a toy or a toothbrush, a toilet auger is the right tool. It is a short hand-cranked cable with a protective sleeve that feeds through the porcelain bend without scratching it, and it can often hook the object out. A wire coat hanger is a last resort; wrap the end in a cloth so it does not mark the glaze.

Will a blocked toilet unblock itself?

Sometimes, if the blockage is only toilet paper. Paper softens in water, so leaving the bowl for an hour or two can let it break down enough to drain.

Wet wipes, paper towels, sanitary products, cotton buds and solid objects will not dissolve, however long you wait. Wipes are made to stay strong when wet, and even those labelled flushable do not break down like toilet paper. If the water level has not moved after an hour, it is not going to fix itself.

While you wait, keep everyone off that toilet and do not flush again to test it. Each flush adds more water to a bowl that cannot drain and is the most common way a slow toilet ends up overflowing onto the floor.

Toilet still blocked?

Cheeky's Plumbers will clear it with the right tools, check whether the drain is the real cause and agree the price before starting.

Can I use drain cleaner in a toilet?

It is best not to. Caustic drain cleaners are designed for hair and grease in basins, not paper or wipes in a toilet, and they often sit in the bowl doing very little.

The bigger risk is what happens next. If you then plunge, the chemical can splash onto skin and into eyes, and anyone who later works on that toilet is handling it too. Some products also generate heat that can stress the porcelain or old pipe joints. Enzyme-based cleaners are gentler, but they work slowly and will not clear a solid blockage. Plunger, soap and hot water, or an auger, are safer and usually faster.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

A toilet that blocks again and again is usually telling you about the pipe behind it, not the pan. The common causes are a partial blockage that never fully cleared, a low-flush suite on a long or flat drain run, wipes collecting at a joint, or tree roots in an old drain.

Roots are a common cause in established suburbs. Mt Eden's older villas were built before the last farmland was subdivided around 1930, and many still have earthenware drains near mature trees. In Glen Eden, red clay that swells and shrinks with the seasons can shift drain joints out of line, giving paper something to catch on. Our guide to tree roots in drains explains why older Auckland pipes are vulnerable.

The flush matters too. BRANZ's Level guidance notes older cisterns can use up to 12 litres a flush, while modern dual flush suites use 6/3 or 4.5/3 litres. A low-flush pan on old pipework sometimes needs a couple of flushes for heavy loads.

Is it the toilet or the drain?

If only one toilet is slow and every other fixture drains normally, the blockage is in that toilet or its short branch pipe. If the shower gurgles when you flush, a second toilet is also slow, or the gully trap outside is full or overflowing, the blockage is further down in the shared drain.

That distinction changes the fix. A single toilet is cleared at the pan. A main line blockage is cleared from an outside access point, and a plunger will not reach it. Our article on what a gully trap is explains why an overflowing gully is such a useful clue, and our blocked drains page covers how main lines are cleared. Pipes on your property are yours to maintain, but Watercare's guidance is that the public sewer is theirs, so a camera that shows the fault in the public main can save you the bill.

When should I call a plumber for a blocked toilet?

Call a plumber when two or three rounds with a plunger and an auger have not worked, when something solid is wedged in the trap, or when more than one fixture is affected. Call straight away if sewage is coming up through a floor waste or shower, because that is a main drain blockage.

Cheeky's Plumbers clears toilets with a proper toilet auger, lifts the pan only when an object is wedged, and runs a camera into the drain if a toilet keeps blocking. You can read about our blocked toilet service, or if wastewater is coming up inside, use our 24/7 emergency plumber line. For the inner suburbs our emergency plumber Mt Eden page has local response details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a toilet if it is draining slowly?

Use it sparingly and avoid full flushes until it is cleared. A slow toilet is partly blocked, and each flush can either clear it or pack the blockage tighter. Try the plunger or hot water method first.

Why does my toilet gurgle when the shower drains?

Gurgling usually means air is being pulled through the toilet's water seal because a shared drain or vent is partly blocked. It is an early warning of a drain problem, so have it checked before it turns into an overflow.

Is it safe to flush flushable wipes?

No. Wipes are designed to hold together when wet, so they snag in pipes and gather paper behind them. Put them in the bin, along with paper towels, cotton buds and sanitary products.

How do I stop the toilet overflowing while I fix it?

Turn off the small stop valve on the water pipe behind or beside the toilet. If you cannot find it, lift the cistern lid and hold the float up. Then you can work on the blockage without the bowl refilling.

Should I replace a toilet that keeps blocking?

Not until the drain has been checked. Most repeat blockages come from the pipe, not the pan. If a camera shows the drain is sound and the pan design is the issue, replacing the suite can make sense.
