North Shore disposal units: villa peninsulas, bridge-era suburbs and Albany new builds

The North Shore's housing tells you a lot about what a disposal unit is likely to face. In Devonport and on Northcote Point, villas from the late nineteenth century often have old earthenware drains and narrow, tight kitchens added to over the years. A unit in one of these homes needs a sound outside line, and we will usually suggest a camera check first if the kitchen drain has ever blocked.

Suburbs such as Glenfield and the East Coast Bays grew fast after the Harbour Bridge opened in 1959. Kitchens there are commonly on their second or third renovation, and the drains outside are often clay or early PVC laid in the inner North Shore's heavy clay. That ground swells and shrinks with the seasons and can leave low spots in the line, which is where ground food tends to collect. Checking the fall to the gully trap is part of our install, not an extra. Closer to Takapuna and Milford, a single street can mix original houses on private lines with newer apartments joined to shared stacks, and we adjust the advice to suit.

Further north, Albany and the newer streets around it date mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, including many monolithic-clad homes. Leaks are the main concern there, because water escaping from a unit can reach the framing without being seen. We seal flanges and connections carefully, check the cabinet base for old damage, and recommend replacing units that have started leaking through the body. Around Lake Pupuke and Devonport, volcanic ground makes outside drain repairs more involved, which is another reason to keep fat and fibrous scraps out of the unit wherever you live on the Shore.

Local tip: If you live in a bridge-era North Shore home and the kitchen sink is already slow, have the drain checked before you add a disposal unit.
