A few early villa suburbs like Devonport and Northcote Point, then mass suburban growth after the 1959 Harbour Bridge, through to the large 1990s and 2000s developments around Albany. Cheeky's Plumbers lays new wastewater and stormwater drains for homeowners, builders and developers across Auckland. We handle everything from a single new connection for a sleepout to the full drainage layout for a multi-unit subdivision, including the consent drawings, council inspections and as-built plans. All quotes are free and all work is carried out under PGDB authorisation.

North Shore drainlaying from Devonport's volcanic ground to Albany's clay

The North Shore stretches from old villa peninsulas to large 1990s and 2000s developments, and its drainlaying work changes accordingly. In Devonport and on Northcote Point, sections are older, streets are narrow and the ground can include volcanic rock around the cones and filled former swamp toward Narrow Neck. A new drain there might mean breaking rock on one site and dealing with soft, wet fill on the next. Access for an excavator is often limited, so we plan for smaller machines and hand digging where needed. On subdivided sections across the Shore, several new units often share one private drain to the public connection, and the order of works matters so each unit can be signed off.

Inland suburbs such as Glenfield and Albany sit on Waitemata sandstone with heavy clay soils, the same clay that made farming hard on the inner Shore. Clay trenches are straightforward in summer but slow in winter, and the ground moves with moisture, so bedding and backfill need care. Many homes here date from the post-bridge building boom, and infill behind them often means relocating an original clay line or finding a public sewer running through the back yard. Service plans come first, then a camera and locator run along the private lines, and any build-over question goes to Watercare before the design is fixed.

Along the East Coast Bays, the sandstone cliffs erode, and runoff from new roofs and paving must be handled so it does not make that worse. Consent conditions may require detention tanks, controlled outlets or connections to public pipes rather than discharging toward the cliff. Around Albany, larger commercial and multi-unit sites need full drainage layouts, including shared private drains and stormwater management. Whatever the site, we prepare plans, coordinate inspections and provide as-built drawings when the work is complete.

Local tip: On an East Coast Bays clifftop section, ask about stormwater requirements before finalising your design, as discharging toward the cliff is usually not allowed.

Drainlaying North Shore FAQs

Can stormwater from my new extension on an East Coast Bays clifftop go over the bank?

Usually not. Discharging toward eroding cliffs can make instability worse, so consents commonly require a connection to a public pipe or detention with a controlled outlet. We check what applies before designing the drainage.

How much does drainlaying cost?

It depends on the length and depth of the drain, ground conditions, access and connection requirements. We provide a free quote from plans or after a site visit.

Can I build over an existing drain?

Sometimes, but building over or near public pipes needs approval and private drains under a building need access considered. We check this early in the design.
