East Auckland's housing spans about fifty years, and the right disposal unit job changes with it. In Howick and Pakuranga, many kitchens sit in homes from the 1950s onward and have been renovated more than once, so the waste under the sink can be a patchwork of fittings from different decades. We tidy that up as part of a replacement, because a unit bolted onto a mismatched trap is where most leaks start. Glen Innes has older state houses where the kitchen line often shares one long run to the street, and a unit there needs that run to be in decent shape.

Botany and Flat Bush are mostly late 1990s and 2000s, and many of those homes fall in the period linked to leaky building problems. A weeping unit in a sealed cabinet is a quiet way for water to reach the framing, so we treat any leak in these kitchens as something to fix promptly rather than live with.

The ground varies too. Heavy clay covers much of the area, with softer alluvial soils along the Tāmaki River and the Pakuranga and Botany creeks, and both can let a drain settle out of its original fall over time. Ground food is less forgiving of a sag than plain water. Around Pigeon Mountain and Half Moon Bay, basalt under the section makes outside drain repairs slower, which is another reason to avoid putting fat and fibrous scraps through the unit. Over in East Tāmaki and Highbrook, workplace kitchens are a separate case, and we can advise there as well. Older homes in the coastal bays, which began as small beach communities from the 1910s, may have had their kitchens extended more than once, so the drain route is worth confirming before a unit goes in.

Local tip: If your East Auckland home is on low ground near one of the creeks, keep an eye on how quickly the sink empties after the unit runs, as a sagging line shows up there first.
