Mostly industrial and commercial premises, including the Highbrook business park, next to fast-growing residential neighbourhoods. We install, replace and repair waste disposal units in kitchens across Auckland. We check that your sink, waste pipe and power suit a unit before we fit one, and when an old unit fails we tell you whether it is worth fixing or time for a new one.
Disposal units for East Tāmaki workplaces and the new homes beside them
East Tāmaki is mostly business premises, from older industrial units to the Highbrook business park, with newer residential streets growing alongside. That mix means two quite different kinds of disposal unit work. In workplaces, the unit is usually in a staff kitchen or lunchroom where lots of people use it and nobody owns it. Cutlery, bottle tops and plastic wrap find their way in, and the unit jams or the reset trips several times a month. We free and reset jammed units, and where one keeps failing we will suggest a tougher model or a simple sign about what goes in. A strainer that stays in the plug hole when the unit is off also catches most of the cutlery.
It is worth being clear about one thing. A domestic disposal unit is not a substitute for a grease trap. If your premises prepare food for sale, fats and food solids from that work should be managed under trade waste rules, so check with Watercare before adding or upgrading a unit in a commercial kitchen. We can talk through the options and fit what is appropriate.
On the residential side, many homes nearby were built from the 1990s on, some with monolithic cladding, and the standard advice applies: fix leaks under the sink quickly so water does not reach the framing. Where a kitchen sits a long way from the gully trap, as happens in some larger new builds, we check the whole waste run so the extra solids have a clear path. Ground conditions count here too. Much of East Tāmaki sits on basalt tuff and old lava flows, so digging up a drain outside is slower and dearer than on clay. Running plenty of cold water while the unit grinds, and keeping fat out of it, is cheaper than an excavation through rock.
Local tip: For a shared East Tāmaki staff kitchen, a short list of what not to put in the unit, taped inside the cupboard door, prevents most callouts.

Waste Disposal Units East Tāmaki FAQs
Can we fit a disposal unit in our East Tāmaki café or factory kitchen instead of a grease trap?
No. A disposal unit does not replace a grease trap, and food businesses need to meet trade waste requirements. Check with Watercare first, and we can advise on what suits the premises.
Can a leaking disposal unit be repaired?
Leaks at the sink flange or connections often can be. Leaks from the body usually mean the unit needs replacing.
Why is my waste disposal unit humming but not working?
It is usually jammed. Turn off the power at the switch and do not put your hand inside. We can free it and reset it.
