Henderson irrigation: creek flats, clay rises and established trees
Henderson sits where five streams, including the Ōpanuku, Oratia and Swanson, meet at Henderson Creek, and that shapes how its gardens behave. The higher ground is Waitemata sandstone with clay on top, while the low ground near the creek has rhyolitic clays and peat that can stay wet through much of the year. One section can contain both, with a dry, hard bank near the street and a soft, damp patch at the back. A single-zone sprinkler system cannot serve both, so we zone by ground type and use a soil moisture or rain sensor to skip watering when the low areas are already wet.
The suburb is also tagged for mature trees, and established trees change irrigation design in two ways. Shade under a large canopy means far less water is needed there than in full sun, so shaded and sunny beds go on separate zones. Roots near the surface mean trenching has to be careful, and in root zones we use flexible drip line laid on the surface under mulch rather than digging new trenches.
Henderson's history as wine country, with the Corban estate a reminder of the vineyards that once covered much of the area, also means some older sections have unusually long, narrow shapes or sloping garden terraces. On terraces we use pressure-compensating drippers so the top and bottom rows get the same amount of water.
Because the system connects to the town supply, Watercare's medium-risk rating for garden irrigation applies, which means a double-check valve on the irrigation branch and a test each year. We fit the valve as part of the installation, in a box where the tester can reach it, and can arrange the annual test so the paperwork stays current.

Less than in sunny areas. We put shaded beds on their own zone with a lighter schedule and use surface drip under mulch so tree roots are not disturbed.
How often should an irrigation system be serviced?
A check at the start of spring is a good habit: flush the lines, clean filters, replace damaged heads and update the controller schedule.
Is drip irrigation better than sprinklers?
For garden beds, usually. Drip puts water at the roots with little lost to wind or evaporation. Sprinklers still suit lawns.
