Older town housing that spread from the 1950s with the Southern Motorway, plus newer subdivisions such as the McLennan development. Cheeky's Plumbers lays new wastewater and stormwater drains for homeowners, builders and developers across Auckland. We handle everything from a single new connection for a sleepout to the full drainage layout for a multi-unit subdivision, including the consent drawings, council inspections and as-built plans. All quotes are free and all work is carried out under PGDB authorisation.
Papakura drainlaying on peat, near the inlet and beside Pukekiwiriki
Papakura has some of the most varied ground in South Auckland for drainlaying. Before settlement, northern Papakura and the land toward Takanini was mostly wetland and peat bog, and peat is soft, compressible and often wet. Drains laid in it can settle over time, and trenches can fill with groundwater during construction. On these sites, we pay close attention to bedding, check levels carefully and may recommend extra support or design choices that allow for movement.
On the eastern side, toward Pukekiwiriki, the ground changes to basalt from the old South Auckland volcanic field, which can slow excavation considerably. Along the Pahurehure Inlet, lower sections can sit close to the water and stormwater design needs to account for that. The result is that two Papakura sections only a few streets apart can need very different approaches.
The housing stock adds another layer. Older town homes from the 1950s onward often have original clay drains, and infill or extensions on those sections usually means replacing or rerouting them. Newer subdivisions, such as McLennan, have modern drainage laid by the developer, so work there is more about extensions, minor dwellings or changes for garages and outdoor areas. Some lower-lying sites also cannot fall to the public sewer, and a private pump station becomes part of the design. Older lots near Great South Road and the town centre can have public sewers or stormwater pipes crossing them, so council GIS records are checked before a route is drawn.
On peat, we also think about where the new drain meets the house. A building on piles can settle at a different rate from the ground around it, so the connection point is where flexible joints and careful detailing earn their keep.
Local tip: If your Papakura section is on former peat land, ask about settlement allowances in the drain design before work begins.

Drainlaying Papakura FAQs
Does building on peat in northern Papakura affect new drains?
Yes. Peat is soft and can settle, which can change a drain's fall over time. We bed pipes carefully, check levels closely and recommend design measures that allow for movement where needed.
What is an as-built plan and why do I need one?
It is a drawing showing where the drains were actually laid. Council needs it to sign off the work, and it saves time and money for anyone who has to find the drains later.
Do I need a building consent for new drainage in Auckland?
Most new drainlaying, including new connections and alterations to existing drains, needs a building consent. We check your project and prepare the application and drainage plans.
